An Empty Altar is located in [[Your Tomb]], which is accessible when you are [[Actually Ed the Undying]]. Its sole purpose is to bear the [[Holy MacGuffin (Actually Ed the Undying)|Holy MacGuffin]]; recovering the MacGuffin and putting it back on the altar ends the run.

Clicking the Altar without the MacGuffin shows a message:
:This little altar is where you keep the Holy MacGuffin. Or did, until that jerk <playername> stole it.
