As you're plumbing the depths, you notice something out of the corner of your trained Turtle Tamer's eye -- an orangutan!

Just kidding -- it's a turtle. A turtle floating motionless in the eerie stillness of the deep. How does it do that?

Tame it
  • Successful taming:

You swim up behind it and deftly subdue it. Its bizarre buoyancy makes it hard to handle, but you manage.

You acquire an item: ballast turtle
  • Unsuccessful taming:

You swim up behind it and deftly subdue it. Its bizarre buoyancy makes it hard to handle, and you demonstrate this by dropping it almost immediately. Shucks.

Occurs in any underwater zone as a Turtle Tamer.

Notes

  • This encounter does not consume an adventure.
  • Only three ballast turtles may be tamed per day, across all underwater zones. Additional taming attempts result in dropping it almost immediately. Shucks.

History

  • Prior to the Turtle Taming revamp, Eau de Tortue needed to be active in order to receive this adventure, and a lot of work was required to tame the turtle:
    • If one did not have Fishy on, they received this message:
You swim toward the turtle, but clumsily, disturbing the water and scaring him off in a big blast of bubbles.
    • If one had Fishy on but did not have a Grinning Turtle or Syncopated Turtle as their active familiar they received this message:
You swim toward the turtle, disturbing the water betwixt you. It opens its eyes, turns to see you, and then disappears out of sight in a violent burst of bubbles.

Man. That thing moved pretty quick, especially for a turtle!
    • If one had Fishy on and a Grinning Turtle or Syncopated Turtle as their active familiar but did not have a turtling rod equipped they received this message:
You send <Name> out in front of you to distract the turtle while you approach it from behind.

You creep up (or whatever you call the swimming version of creeping) and try to grab it, but it freaks out when you get a couple of feet from it, and disappears out of sight in a burst of bubbles.
    • If one had all of those requirements met and had not tamed three of this type of turtle already that day, they received this message:
You send <Name> out in front of you to distract the turtle while you approach it from behind.

You swim up behind it and deftly subdue it with your turtling rod. Its bizarre buoyancy makes it hard to handle, but you manage.
You acquire an item: ballast turtle
    • If one had all of those requirements met but had already tamed three of this type of turtle that day, they instead received this message:
You send <Name> out in front of you to distract the turtle while you approach it from behind.

You swim up behind it and deftly subdue it with your turtling rod. Its bizarre buoyancy makes it hard to handle, and you demonstrate this by dropping it almost immediately. Shucks.
