When Used

Without inkwell or tattered scrap of paper: You pick up the pen, and it floats out of your hand of its own accord. It wiggles around in the air for a while, but it can't find anything to dip into, so it just floats back into your sack.

With inkwell: You pick up the pen, and it immediately dips itself into your inkwell, completely draining it. Filled to capacity, it floats around for a bit looking for something to write on, but to no avail. It dumps the ink back in the inkwell and floats gently back into your sack.

With tattered scrap of paper and [[inkwell]:

You pick up the pen, and it immediately dips itself into your inkwell, completely draining it. Filled to capacity, it immediately floats toward a tattered scrap of paper in your sack, and begins scrawling arcane symbols on it. Exhausted, the pen falls to the floor, where it disintegrates into dust. Well, dust covered with ink. More like mud than dust, I guess.
