• <name> takes a pull on the hookah, and immediately goes into a coughing fit, blowing a cloud of smoke in your face. Since this is magic smoke, instead of giving you cancer (or, perhaps in addition to giving you cancer), it gives you an effect:

Notes

• This item gives your familiar the ability to blow smoke in your face at the start of combat, granting 5 turns (6 if you count the one you get the effect in) of one random effect out of most non-detrimental effects in the game.
• This item can bring you above the 3 AT buff limit. If you are above the buff limit and unequip your Hat, Pants, or Accessories, the extra buffs are removed just as if you removed equipment that granted extra songs.
• This item can give you ordinarily class-specific effects, such as Frozen Shoulders or Disco Concentration.
• The Hookah will not grant:
  • Half-Astral, Absinthe-Minded, Form of...Cockroach!, Shape of...Mole!, Form of...Bird! (other Content Familiar effects?)
  • Stabilizing Oiliness, Slippery Oiliness, Expert Oiliness.
  • some Combat Frequency modifiers: Inky Camouflage, Smooth Movements, Musk of the Moose, Carlweather's Cantata of Confrontation, The Sonata of Sneakiness
    • Though Fresh Scent and Hippy Stench are possible.
  • Costume effects connected to the Monster Manuel.
• Gives one effect at the start of every 6th combat encounter for which the Hookah is equipped. By using free runaways and/or extending buff durations, you are able to stack multiple buffs from the Hookah.
• The hookah may give you 6 additional turns of an effect you already have active. It will still count down 6 more adventures before giving you a new effect.

References

• In the novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Alice stumbles upon a hookah-smoking caterpillar. As most caterpillars are rather small (this particular one being exactly three inches high, which is a very good height indeed), they need tiny hookahs accordingly.
• The item description is a reference to the smoking industry's view on its products.
