It is commonly thought that breaking a mirror gives you 7 years' bad luck; hence the amount of adventures given by the mirror.
The description refers to Disney's Robin Hood where Prince John breaks a mirror over Sir Hiss's head and the snake replies, "You broke your mother's mirror, didn't you? Didn't you?"
