The Unthawed

You open the door to the next level of the basement and find what at first appears to be an empty room. You enter cautiously and stand still, listening intently. You feel a blast of cold air and hear the fluttering of leathery wings high above you. You look up and see what looks like a snowball with batwings (which is somewhat less common than a bullet with butterfly wings) lazily spiraling down toward you. As it reaches your eye level, it starts spinning around in a flurry of...well...snow flurries, and turns into a snowman wearing a floor-length black cape. He has a corncob pipe, a button nose, and two fangs made out of icicles.

"Happy Birthday, adventurer!" he says, unearthly light gleaming within the depths of his eyes made out of coal. "I vant to freeze your blaaaaaahd."

Since your blood is already starting to run cold, you've got your work cut out for you.

Evade the Vampsicle

You square off against the snowman, and stare deeply into the hypnotic spirals in his eyes.

You lose X hit points. (cold damage)

You lose X hit points. (spooky damage)

• if this beats you up

  You stand frozen to the spot -- both literally and figuratively -- as the vampire snowman's hypnotic gaze transfixes your mind and his icicle fangs transfix your jugular vein.

• if you survive

  After a few minutes of this, you force yourself to break eye contact with his hypnotic gaze, muster up the last of your body heat, and make a dash for the door at the other side of the room. You hear the snowman gliding along behind you, but you run through the door and slam it before the vampire can get through. You hear a dull thudding as he slams his body against the door, followed by a series of soft splats as his body falls apart from the force of his pounding. You certainly won't cry if he never comes back again someday.
