You decide to take a short break from this ridiculous war, and find a tree to sit under out of the way for a while. It turns out this particular tree has had quite a few visitors before, as there's a scraped-off section of bark with line after line of hobo glyphs carved into it, each line done in a slightly different style.
In one of the passages below the Enormous Greater-Than Sign, you find the decaying body of a hobo, who appears to have had his hat stolen... along with the top of his head, and the contents thereof.
You open up your binder and spend a good hour or so working out the symbols. It turns out to be sort of like a conversation, each line commenting on the previous writers' remarks:
Near the body, you find a broken penknife next to a bunch of little squiggles scratched into the wall. Looking more closely, you see that the squiggles are, in fact, hobo glyphs, and you flip open your binder to try and translate them.  


"These guys are crazy. They're dying over which flavored sugar water is better!"  
As far as you can tell, they seem to say "What the heck is going on in this crazy place there's all letters everywhere and oh my god what is this lowercase h doing to my hea".


"Seriously, it's sad when people fight over something so trivial."
You jot down some notes in your binder.


"Yeah, it's not like it's about railroad company pride or something."
"Loathing Pacific all the way baby!"
"Shut up, idiot, Transcontinental is totally superior!"
"STFU NOOB"
...and it goes on like that for a while. Against your better judgement, you make some notes in your hobo glyphs binder.
