• The mention of the dual nature of light refers to the concept that light has the properties of both a wave and a particle (beam or mote, in this case).
• The terms "beam" and "mote" are a play on some well-known Bible verses, in which "beam" is used in the sense of a large piece of wood, not a ray of light: "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
