In fact, the only reason he joined up in the first place was that he was 1) drunk, and 2) tired of people making fun of his first name. Having enlisted, Lily quickly determined that the safest place to be standing in a battle is -- well, nowhere near the battle, but barring that, nowhere near the front lines. So he's made a career out of running backwards. Say what you will, but it's been a pretty long career so far, so he might be onto something.
The other soldiers in Lily's platoon have contemplated telling him about the sniper, but figured that'd be needlessly cruel.
