Killing the hermit is a bit of KoL myth and legend. It is widely believed by newbies, largely due to the rumor being widely spread by seasoned players, that the Hermit at The Hermitage can be killed. The rumors often include some hint as to great powers gained from such an act, and requiring either fictious items (such as a meaty clover), or useless items (such as the flaming crutch or crowbarrr). Despite the constant rumors, Jick insists there is no way to kill the Hermit. A joke in reference to this is in the description of the tiny plastic hermit.

It should be noted that Killing the hermit is also used as naughty slang by many players, and if you ask about it during chat, references will undoubtably be made to the The Orc Chasm and how killing the hermit is a necessary step to crossing it.

Example

An example of the story is as follows:

Adventure in the sewer until you find some meat smithing powder (a rare drop). Use it on the ten-leaf clover and smith it with a dense meat stack to form a meaty clover. With the meaty clover in your inventory, along with a flaming crutch, equip the crowbarrr. Adventuring in the sewer will now produce the following message:

Backdoored!

You pry the sewer open with your crowbarrr, the Luck of the meat must be with you! Your meaty clover melts away with the sound of a buzzing microwave... you know, the broken kind. Anyway the sewer is now open.

Now adventure in the backdoored sewer. You will see the following:

You wouldn't hit a man with a crutch? What about a flaming crutch?

You sneak into the hermitage through the backdoor. The hermit whirls around to confront you with mad ninja skills, and real ultimate power... lots of it.

"You wouldn't hit a man with a crutch would you?", you ask.

"Yes," grunts the hermit.

"What about a flaming crutch?"

"Oh well that is totally different I guess," says the now defenseless hermit.

You beat the stuffings out of him and his turkey dinner.

You've now killed the hermit! Congratulations!
