You're fighting a smell-o-the-wisp
A will-o-the-wisp is a bubble of marsh gas -- methane, usually -- that ignites, becoming an eerie hovering ball of blue fire. In areas with high concentrations of magical radiation, these fires sometimes acquire semi-permanence (that is, they don't burn out right away), and limited sentience.
A smell-o-the-wisp is the same thing, except unignited -- a little cloud of semi-sentient methane gas that delights in playing malicious pranks on passers-by. These pranks usually involve making your travelling companions think you cut one.
