Many people think of purple as being synonymous with violet, but strictly speaking it's not -- purple has more red in it than violet does. (Actually, it's more complicated than that -- it depends on whether you're talking about pigment or light, and gets into extra-spectral colors and wavelengths and stuff, but I've stopped caring now.)
