Damage

Maybe someone's solved this already, but I haven't run across anyone in my groups who's known the damage formula with any certainty yet.

I spent a few days trying to see if I could produce any jitter in the damage without altering my outfit power, but it seems like it's very definitely pegged to the beret's power or DA calculation; it seems to me there's no RNG or other external variable element (or if there is, it only kicks in at damage ranges so high I've never seen it have a clear influence).

My initial attempts after all that nonsense are below. I have Tao of the Terrapin HC permed, so my beret is always 20 power and my pants are similarly double their usual value.
I uneffected myself and took all non-beret gear off aside from what's in the Outfit column. I targeted the lowest outfit power I was able to achieve (20) and doubled it in steps up to 640.

In case it's relevant (I doubt it is -- I was seeing the same damage against normal hobos and fluffy bunnies during my earlier defense/jitter tests), I was a L29 Accordion Thief at 620mus/654mys/792mox under Vole.

Effective Power Beret DA1 Blast PD % of EP % PD deviation2 Flat PD deviation3 Outfit
20 4 3 15.00 (Baseline) (Baseline) Nothing
40 8 6 15.00 0.00 0 old sweatpants
80 16 13 16.25 +1.25 +1 Dyspepsi-Cola fatigues
160 32 26 16.25 +1.25 +2 demonskin trousers
320 64 53 16.56 +1.56 +5 antique greaves
640 128 102 15.94 +0.94 +6 cool iron greaves, hipposkin poncho4

1: Actual, not predicted; directly checked via opening the Beret description after dressing up. Just in case.
2: How far "% of EP" strays from the ratio we see on 20 power, with non-zero values suggesting the relationship isn't strictly geometric (and there's either a non-EP factor or some rounding slop in there).
3: See above, except for the flat value of the PD instead of PD/EP.
4: This shirt boosts ML by 10. It probably doesn't matter for data accuracy here, per my prior notes. (Its power also doesn't get doubled by Tao of the Terrapin, being a shirt.)

I'll update the article to note the damage is in the ballpark of 75%-85% the beret's DA (since it's better than no info at all), but maybe someone else has better data or can spot the missing term here. --Digi (talk) 05:49, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
