Err, 10/6 is the PRICE of the hat, not the size (if Lewis Carroll refers to it as the "size", it's supposed to be humurous).
10/6 is pronounced "ten and six" and stands for ten shillings and six pence, which is fifty two and a half new pence (0.525 GBP).
But you're too young and live on the wrong side of the Atlantic to know that...
