Description

The Council of Loathing sends you to the Copse of the Deep Fat Friars in The Distant Woods because the Friars are having a problem. Once in the Copse of the Deep Fat Friars go to Talk to the Deep Fat Friars and they will explain everything.

Tasks

The Friars tell you that you need three items to cleanse the taint:

You get those items while adventuring in The Dark Neck of the Woods, The Dark Heart of the Woods and The Dark Elbow of the Woods, respectively.

Visit the Friars once you have all three items, and they'll say:

You've got all three of the ritual items, Adventurer! Hurry to the center of the circle, and perform the ritual!

Head to The Deep Fat Friars' Gate to cleanse the taint and complete the quest:

You place the dodecagram on the ground at the center of the circle of stones.
You light the box of candles and place them in a circle.
You wave your eldritch butterknife to and fro.
The infernal creatures who have tainted the Friar's copse stream back into the gate, hooting and shrieking.
The Friars approach you.

Pre-Ascension/No path/Teetotaler:

"Thank you, adventurer! Truly you are a master of cleansing the taint. We'll be sure and let the Council know that you've made good on their promise of help.
Brother Mollusk has been trying to figure out where in the Hey Deze all of these creatures came from, though, and his studies through our local library's collection of tomes of arcane knowledge has been fruitful. Even though he's racked up several thousand Meat's worth of late fees for not returning the tomes on time.
Anyway, Brother Mollusk discovered that we opened our portal directly above Hey Deze's biggest city, Pandemonium. It was recently named #1 on Hey Deze Weekly's 'Best Places to Be Eternally Damned' list. All of the downwardly-mobile imps and demons live there, including Azazel, one of the ArchDukes of Hey Deze.
Incidentally, one of the L Imps dropped a copy of Hey Deze Weekly as he was leaving. The lead story says that Azazel is missing some vitally important personal possessions. Somebody probably stole them -- that's one of the hazards of living among creatures of pure evil, you know. The article says he's offering a reward for their return. It's up to you if you want to get involved; we're going to stay the Hey Deze away from this gate from now on."
Continue adventuring in the The Deep Fat Friar's Gate to receive Azazel's unicorn, Azazel's lollipop and Azazel's tutu in 3 non-combat adventures. Once received, adventure more, to get the Bureaucracy of the Damned adventure and choose to follow the pencilnecked demon. You will receive an item, which when used will give you the appropriate skill for your path. See the Azazel, Ma Belle adventure for more information.

Rewards

  • In your Quest Log, under completed quests, you will see: "You have cleansed the taint of the Deep Fat Friars. Congratulations!"
  • The Deep Fat Friars' Gate area is opened.
  • An item is received, which when used give a Steel Liver/Stomach/Spleen, depending on your path.

Council Text

On initial visit:

The Deep Fat Friars in the Distant Woods are having a problem -- one of the experiments has gone awry, and fey creatures have invaded their grove. Please, Adventurer, lend them your assistance.

On subsequent visits:

The Deep Fat Friars still require your assistance. You can find them in the Distant Woods.

Notes

  • The last action as part of the quest does not take any adventures and can be done while falling down drunk.
  • This quest only shows up after the rat problem in The Typical Tavern is resolved.
  • Once you have completed the quest, only one adventuring area remains: The Deep Fat Friars' Gate. The Copse and The Neck, The Heart and The Elbow disappear from the map until you ascend and receive the quest again.

References

  • Each of the items needed to cleanse the taint are common tools used in Wiccan ritual; candles, an athame (a ritual knife), and a pentagram (or in this case, a dodecagram).
  • The concept of opening the gates of Hell also follows this theme related to witchcraft, as those accused of witchcraft from the Middle Ages all the way up to colonial times were traditionally said to be in league with demons. Modern witches try as hard as possible to distance themselves from this image.
  • The quest instructions to "cleanse the taint" may be a sexual innuendo.
