A Labour of Moles
You tunnel through the floor of an enormous underground chamber, so vast that you can't even see where the ceiling curves down to to meet the floor. You could fit the whole Seaside Town in here and still have room for Ronald and Grimace.
As you gaze at the stalactites on the ceiling, humbled and awed by the massive scale of it all, a mole steps on your foot. "Pardon me," it squeaks, and bustles off. Then another mole brushes past you, and another, and another...
You stop staring at the ceiling and look out over the chamber itself. My god, it's full of moles. More moles than a Marilyn Monroe Lookalike Convention. More moles than a dermatologist's -- well, you get the point. Lots of moles. You might even say this is the central mole station, but that wouldn't be funny at all.
You decide to count all the moles, which is no small task: they're not wearing, say, identifying party hats or anything, it's pretty dark in here, and they're all busily scampering around the chamber, over and underneath each other. You end up picking up half of the moles just to count the moles underneath them.
It turns out there are exactly 6.02X1023 moles in the chamber. That was quite a workout, mentally and physically, and you feel pretty good about yourself for doing it.
