The Hidden City opened after discovering it while adventuring in The Hidden Temple as part of the Quest for the Holy MacGuffin.
The Quest
You were presented with a 5x5 map of unexplored ruins. Of these twenty-five sections, there were:

Twenty squares of Ruins. Five of these contained an ancient protector spirit.

If you lost to the spirit (or ran away), it would appear on the map. Once you defeated it, the map would revert to explored ruins, but that space will not contain any adventures if revisited.

Four altars. Here, you would find four bowl-shaped indentations. Use the stone spheres dropped by protector spirits in the indentations.

A Smallish Temple. To enter, you would need to collect the four triangular stones from the altars. Upon inserting all four triangular stones, you would fight a Protector Spectre. |

Notes
- Once you explored an area of unexplored ruins, it would change to what you have discovered.
- Once you placed the correct stone on any altar you were not allowed to place anything further on that particular altar.
- If you showed up to the Hidden City when falling-down drunk, you received the message, "You're too drunk to screw around in a jungle, bungling or otherwise." This prevented you from inserting anything into the altars. You could, however, click on the adventure again link and you would get a drunken stupor as normal.
- Discovering an altar did not consume an adventure.
References
- The pool balls match the colors of the Pokemon that accept them -- yellow = 1-ball, blue = 2-ball, orange= 5-ball, green = 6-ball.
- Gotta Worship 'Em All! is a rewriting of the Pokémon catchphrase "Gotta Catch 'Em All!" Additionally, the elemental gods of the Hidden City are portmanteaus of Pokémon names Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur and the names of Aztec gods Xolotl, Quetzalcoatl, Macuilmalinalli as well as the fictional deity wikipedia:Cthulhu.
- This area is a reference to the Diablo II's Act III area, which had a lost city of Kurast and a plethora of pygmies (often considered the most annoying monsters in the game).
- The theme of elemental magic runs strongly through many mythologies and facets of popular culture, and there is a long-standing convention of using proper keys to unlock specific areas in video games.
- The falling-down drunk message references a Jethro Tull song, "Bungle in the Jungle" and of course the drink of the same name.
