Having enlisted, Lily quickly determined that the safest place to be standing in a battle is -- well, nowhere near the battle, but barring that, nowhere near the front lines. So he's made a career out of running backwards. Say what you will, but it's been a pretty long career so far, so he might be onto something.
The other soldiers in Lily's platoon have contemplated telling him about the sniper, but figured that'd be needlessly cruel.
