He's basically a mobile, horizontal version of that spike people used to use to organize papers on their desks -- y'know, the kind where you're good if you have a bunch of papers that are too important to have strewn all over, but not important enough to not put a big hole through the middle of them?
Since all cards look the same from the back, Alice quickly learned to put Lance on the front lines, lest he accidentally engage in 'friendly perforation.'
