You're fighting an ancient temple guardianYou step into the temple, holding up the glowing crystal you found in the wumpus's lair. It emits a bright blue light that illuminates the darkened corridors, revealing elaborate bas-relief engravings on the walls. They depict a lot of things you can't quite decipher, but which are probably depictions of ancient rituals, or creation myths, or warnings not to buy a second-hand goat from a particular merchant because the engraver's cousin Rhazim totally got burned on a deal there this one time.
Turning a corner, Krakrox came face to face with a stone statue, which he recognized as a sibling of the ones he'd encountered out in the jungle. This one, however, looked practically new, uneroded by the wind and rain over the eons that had passed. The barbarian drew his sword as the statue's eyes flared blue and it raised a heavy stone fist to attack.
