- A broken sword can be seen in the the Picasso painting Guernica, the same painting from which the cubist bull originates.
- The broken sword is a standard fantasy trope, usually of earthshattering importance to the protagonists. For example, see Narsil, Elendil's sword from The Lord of the Rings. The joke here is that this item refers to absolutely nothing in particular.
