• This is a reference to an old nautical joke. Before each battle, a ship's captain asks his porter to bring him a red shirt. This, the captain later explains to the porter, is so the men won't notice if he's wounded, as the blood will not show on the red shirt. Therefore, the sailors will continue fighting bravely. One day, the crew faces a battle against insurmountable odds. "Shall I bring you the red shirt?" His porter asks. "Yes," the captain says, and after a moment's thought, he adds, "and bring me my brown pants as well."
