Category talk:Location Unlocks

From A KoL Wiki

The idea for this was to have a location where one could get a list of items to buy to open new content, however there are a few concerns. First I have only put in the first of Uncle P's items - they are less generally available, but more significantly are not replenish-able unlike the familiar drop items. Second, should we list things like the continuum transfunctioner or Talisman o' Nam which do unlock content, but are part of the ascension path? Dcorrin 18:00, 14 December 2012 (CET)

This is a good idea for a category, but it requires some more thought. I think an issue here is that there are several different mechanics for items to unlock locations.
  1. Mere possesion opening areas. Either permanently, eg dingy dinghy, or temporarily, empty agua de vida bottle -- each is good for 10 adventures in the three zones, with a counter that's not even reset on ascension.
  2. Must be equipped in order to visit, eg Talisman o' Namsilat or the continuum transfunctioner.
  3. Must be used to grant an effect that opens the area, eg transporter transponder or devilish folio.
The antique painting of a landscape doesn't really fit any of those. It's an item that when used gives you a category one item: the map to The Landscaper's Lair. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 19:54, 14 December 2012 (CET)
If you apply the same logic to transponder though that doesn't belong here either, rather the effect does. Discordance 20:35, 14 December 2012 (CET)

Def a needed category. I would put everything in here I think and have the 3 subcategories club suggested for providing a finer grain of sorting. antique painting could possibly fit in here as well if we use this in that manner and sort it with a root items subcat of some kind. Same goes for effect granting items and effects. Discordance 20:35, 14 December 2012 (CET)

I created this because I wanted to identify the items that could be bought that would eventually (through use, or subsequent effect) unlock areas not part of the regular ascension. I had missed the existence of the devilish folio... While Club is correct the painting or for that matter the transponder do not directly open an area, the map and the effect are not able to be directly acquired by a player. Your "list of things to buy" isn't necessarily the most logical categorization. Here's another item: the time sleigh. You had to go out of your way to get it, but then it was not tradable. It also ceased to be useful after Crimboween ended. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 03:31, 15 December 2012 (CET)
Logical, no. It doesn't fit into a non-existent taxonomy of objects in the Kingdom. I am thinking of the player who wants to know what they can do, and is looking for information. As a side note I am always discouraged to find something on the wiki here that while fits into the encyclopedic nature is nothing that I can act on either because it is no longer available content, or requires an exorbitant price to acquire. While I strongly believe all that content is appropriate, there should be some way of marking it as not available. Without overhauling the entire category system, I think there should be a way of coming up with a category and perhaps a few sub-categories where we can indicate unlockable content items. You're missing the Game Grid items, casino pass, Alice's Army/Wizard Shack stuff, Spookyraven gallery key. Nemesis quest stuff as well.--Toffile 04:28, 15 December 2012 (CET)
Nemesis quest areas are not unlocked by having items, any more than The Spooky Gravy Barrow. Yes, you need items, but you also need to interact with NPCs. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 07:52, 15 December 2012 (CET)
