Dwarvish Dice

From A KoL Wiki
Dwarvish Dice
  • First time:

You peek into the dormitory and see several dwarves sitting in a circle. You can't quite make out what they're doing, but the grumbling and laughter piques your interest, and you step in closer (on your tip-toes, trying to look as tall as possible) to get a closer look.

It looks like they're playing some sort of dice game, only the dice are a funny shape -- they appear to have seven sides. Meat changes hands between every roll, so it must be some sort of gambling game.

One of the dwarves looks up at you, then shuffles to the side a bit to make room in the circle for you to sit.

  • Subsequent times:

You wander back into the dormitory, and find the dwarves still gambling with their weird seven-sided dice. One of them nods at you as you approach.

Join the Game

One of the dwarves rolls the pair of dice, one at a time -- they come up <random dwarf rune>, followed by <random dwarf rune>.

He passes the dice to you, and you roll a <random dwarf rune> and a <random dwarf rune>.

The dwarf chuckles heartily and takes X meat from your pile.

You lose X Meat.
or

The dwarf pushes X meat towards you, scowling.

You gain X Meat.

Leave
  • Before playing:

You give the dwarves a friendly smile and a wave, indicating "No thanks, but maybe later!" Fortunately, they seem to interpret your gesture correctly. It would've sucked if a friendly smile and a wave meant "Your mother's a prostitute" to these guys.

  • After playing:

You stuff your winnings (or losings, as the case may be) into your meat pouch and leave the circle.

Occurs at Dormitory.

Notes

This is how the game works:

  • The dwarves count numbers in base seven
  • Each rune corresponds to a digit from 0 to 6; see Dwarvish language.
  • Each roll of the dice gives a number from 1 to 49 (not 0 to 48, double zero is 49) in a manner similar to percentile dice in table-top RPGs
  • Whoever gets higher wins an amount of meat equal to seven times the difference between the two rolls
  • Ties are impossible
  • Playing does not consume an adventure.
  • The odds are even (50/50).
  • You need a minimum of 336 Meat (48*7) to play. If you don't have enough, you get the message:
You approach a group of dwarves playing dice, but it looks like you don't have enough meat to cover the stakes they're playing for.
