Flex Your Pecs in the Narthex
You swim into the huge narthex of the Temple of Violence, flanked on each side by a Mer-kin priest. They dab some kind of sticky goo just under your gill slits (thankfully, your mask holds together) and paint a few runes on your tail.
"And now, Champion," the head Mer-kin priest says, "we shall bestow upon you the blessing of Shub-Jigguwat, the Beast With One Point Twenty-One Thousand Volts, that you may be found pleasing in his sight."
"Will--will that make it easier for me to fight him?" you ask.
The priests give each other a sidelong glance that doesn't inspire much hope. "It will definitely make the fight easier, yes," the head priest says.

You bow your head as the priests chant polysyllabic, vowel-lacking nonsense. Then one of them shoves a censer under your nose, clouding your vision with dense blue vapor. You feel strange.
