- The phrase "who in their right mind would choose to live near one of these things?" is a sly reference to Asymmetric Publications' location slightly to the east of Phoenix, Arizona, as well as its high temperature.
- Sticking feathers in one's mouth is a reference to Jeff Noon's book, Vurt, in which the characters consume color-coded feathers in order to access a shared alternate reality.
