Here There Be No Spants
What you took to be a mountain turns out, on approach, to be a massive Spant hive. Thankfully, it appears to have been abandoned. Well, actually you're not sure if it was abandoned thankfully or not, or even whether Spants are capable of gratitude.
In any case, you should see if there's anything valuable inside. There's probably something valuable inside.

You explore the tunnels of the spant ruin for hours. The only interesting thing you find is a discarded egg casing from a Spant queen, which the nerds back at the Spacegate Facility will probably be pretty excited about.
