Honey, They Know the Names
You wipe your mouth on your sleeve and, desperate to get that horrible taste out of your mouth, wipe your tongue on your sleeve as well. It doesn't help.
"That was disgusting," you say, handing the bowl back to the priest.
"Yes."
"What happens now?"
"Now you summon the Elder Goddess of Hatred."
"What? Why would you want me to do that?"
"It is not what we want. It is what happens."
"You know what?" you gurgle at him. "I really hate you. All of you. So. Much."
"Yes."
He and the other priests begin to pace backwards, away from you, chanting loudly but solemnly. "Iä. Iä. Iä Yog-Urt. Iä. Iä." One of them is holding up a waterproof boombox, playing a tape of "Carmina Burana".
"Shut up!" you shout at them. "You miserable stinking piles!"
"Iä Yog-Urt. Iä. Iä."
The murky darkness from before descends again. You can't see the priests any more, but you can still hear them chanting distantly.
"Iä Yog-Urt. Iä. Iä."
You hate them so much, it feels like your skull is going to split open. Your teeth grind together violently of their own accord.
You hate the priests.
You hate the Mer-kin.
You hate the ocean.
You hate the world.
You hate the universe.
Hate.
Hate.
HATE.
A gurgling scream boils out of your throat:
