I call it a "music box key", but you never found out what that box actually was, I guess. It could have been a jewelry box, or a creepy jack-in-the-box, or some kind of Lament Configuration-style mechanical hellmouth. And considering where you found it, those guesses are in order of likelihood, so it's probably just as well that you couldn't get it open.
