raven You're fighting a raven

Once upon an adventure dreary, you have wandered, slightly leery about exploring this quaint and curious mansion of forgotten lore. As you tiptoed, quietly sneaking, suddenly there came a shrieking, as a huge black bird came streaking, seeking to spill your guts upon the floor.

Generally, ravens are seen as mysterious omens and portents, but this one seems more interested in pecking out your eyeballs than being mysterious, ominous, or portentous. More than one raven is called an 'unkindness', but this particular raven makes that an understatement all by itself.

Hit Message(s):

It continues to claw at your face. Looks like there's no balm in Gilead. Whatever that means. Ouch! Eek!

It drops a heavy marble bust of some Greek chick on your head. Busted! Ow! Eek!

You wonder when it's going to stop pecking out your eyes. Really though, you already know the answer to that one. Oof! Ow!

Critical Hit Message:

Did you know ravens are very intelligent, tool-using creatures? This one is stabbing you with a shiv made from a sharpened bedspring. Ow! Eek! Argh!

Miss Message(s):

It claws at your face, but you dab some balm on the wounds and you feel better. Fortunately, they do have balm in Loathing.

It doesn't seem like the raven will ever stop pecking at your eyes. Fortunately, you don't intend to stop dodging, either.

It tries to drop a heavy marble bust on you, but the wooshing sound gives you a heads-up.

Fumble Message:

It starts to attack you, but gets interrupted by some guy who looks like Robert Smith from The Cure. And then another guy who looks a bit like Trent Reznor shows up, and things get kind of confusing. (FUMBLE!)

References

  • The description of the raven, and most of the combat messages, have to do with Edgar Allen Poe's famous poem The Raven.
  • The "heavy marble bust" messages refer to the "pallid bust of Pallas" that Poe's raven perched on.
  • In addition, the message about having a marble bust on you may refer to a scene near the end of the Cohen Brothers' Remake of "The Ladykillers", in which Professor Goldthwaite H. Dorr (played by Tom Hanks) has just this thing happen to him when a raven flies off of the bust in question.
  • The combat quotes about balm in Loathing/Gilead are a reference to Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven", which was itself referencing the Bible. In I Kings, the prophet Elijah is forced to flee from the wrath of the king, and ends up in the wilderness, where he is fed by ravens. A slightly later prophet, Jeremiah, inquired whether there was "no balm in Gilead."
