• This drink is named for the British science-fiction comedy Red Dwarf. The reference to cats evolving over centuries is a reference to the Cat, a character on the show who was a cat-like humanoid whose species evolved from the main character Lister's pet cat thousands of years ago.
• The part about "dwarves, or giants, or anything that's almost human but not quite" is a reference to stars and the name given to them, more particularly low-mass stars, which has Red Dwarves and Red Giants.
