- "The Masque of the Red Death" is a short story by American author Edgar Allen Poe, in which Prince Prospero throws a masquerade ball in his abbey to distract himself and his guests from the devastation of a plague lurking outside. Eventually, a guest disguised as The Red Death appears, killing Prospero and all the other guests.
