You're fighting a swamp owlYou suddenly get the feeling that you're being watched. This is because a huge, filthy-looking owl is perched on a nearby tree branch, staring at you with his wild yellow eyes. For some reason, he's wearing a bedraggled conical wizard-type hat, with stars and moons on it, presumably scavenged from the nearby ruined wizard tower.
"Who?" the owl asks you.
"Ugh," you reply, "let's not start that old routine."
The owl shrugs, and launches himself at you talons-first with a shriek.

The owl pecks at your eyes with his sharp beak. To add insult to injury, his breath smells like rotten mice. Eek! Ugh! Ugh!
The owl blasts you with a fireball, and appears to be as surprised by this turn of events as you are. Ooh! Ow! Ouch! (hot damage)

The owl stops to lecture you on some scientific topic. Since he doesn't actually speak English, you have no idea what point he's trying to make, but you're pretty sure he doesn't know what he's talking about regardless. (FUMBLE!)

- This is a reference to Howland Owl, the comic strip Pogo. He occasionally wore a wizard hat, was prone to harebrained schemes, and had both sharp interest in, and a poor grasp of, science.
- The old routine is a reference to the positively ancient joke where someone responds to an owl's cry as though it were the question "Who?" The person keeps giving their name more and more specifically, then starts taking the owl's repeated questions personally.
