Talk:Amulet of Yendor

From A KoL Wiki

Does anyone know what "prevents level teleporting" actually means?--Qwertly 00:58, 1 October 2006 (CDT)Qwertly

Well, in the original game, Nethack, the game is set in a multilevel dungeon, and you can gain the ability to simply teleport up or down through the floors of the dungeon. To prevent character who earn the penultimate item (The amulet of Yendor) from merelly teleporting to safety in a few moves, the Amulet prevents the holder from teleporting upwards, so the play has to walk to the surface, constantlly dogged by the self-ressurecting previous owner and his minions.

In the context of this game? No idea. Maybe its just there to be funny.--Rikmach 01:12, 1 October 2006 (CDT)

Does it affect the function of Teleportitis?--Voort 16:56, 1 October 2006 (CDT)

Just tested it. It doesn't seem to affect Teleportitis at all. --TedPro 21:33, 1 October 2006 (CDT)

  • It's been established that teleportitis is not affected by this item, but what happens if you get attacked by a Quantum Mechanic while wearing it? Do you still get teleportitis? --Quietust 22:29, 1 October 2006 (CDT)

It would make no sense for you not to.
1) These items are supposed to be hilariously unuseful.
2) Teleporting from level to level in NetHack is completely different that teleporting around the level you're in, which is what quantum mechanics do. --Someone Else 07:52, 2 October 2006 (CDT)

Added the Altar info

  • Is the amulet lost when visiting the Altar, or do you keep it?--Jubbers 18:40, 12 October 2006 (CDT)
  • Someone recently came and changed all the Nethack references to Rogue references. Now, we know that Rogue is the predecessor to Nethack, but I think the actual reference is to Nethack, as that is the known reference of all of the Nethack items in KoL. Also, if we did go with Rogue, the link should be to Wikipedia:Rogue (computer game) as opposed to the disambiguation page. --Fryguy9 09:43, 12 October 2006 (CDT)
    • This is correct. Regardless of its own origins, the game Xenophobe plays is Nethack, not Rogue. It's a similar situation to "DON'T GIVE 'IM THE STICK!" being a reference to the Fensler Films cartoon, and not to G.I. Joe.--Riff 13:25, 13 October 2006 (CDT)
  • Maybe it prevents you from leveling up? i.e. you need 1 substat for level 12. you equip the amulet and go get some substats. You gain ~300 substats and you should be level 12 but you are still level 11. Anybody could test this? And maybe it prevents leveling down? --Zigota Lt 10:00, 16 January 2007 (CST)

There's something I was wondering about this item. Does it affect any adventures in the DoD by any chance? Like, does the Wizard of Yendor come after you when you have it equipped, f'rinstance? My guess is it wouldn't, assuming the dev team's stand on the usefulness of hilarious items, but you never know...--Mister Shiggedy 00:13, 24 February 2007 (CST)

CDMoyer made this forum post hinting that this is the only gift item which can be stolen in pvp. Has anyone successfully done so? --Vanter 22:12, 1 May 2012 (CEST)

Under Avatar of Jarlsberg, I was doing 100 damage to Punk Rock Giants without this, and 158 with this. Not quite enough to one-hit them, but close. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 03:53, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
