Talk:Black Hole Terrarium

From A KoL Wiki

Why is it presumed that this refers to the song "Black Hole Sun" instead of simply to a black hole, the heaviest object in the universe? --Mkanoap 11:26, 5 May 2006 (CDT) mkanoap

  • Not heaviest, densest. True, some of the black holes in the centers of galaxies are among the heaviest objects in the universe, but they're certainly lighter than the galaxy that surrounds them. And even then, it's only the singularity of the black hole that's incredibly dense--if you measure a black hole as encompassing its event horizon, some are actually less dense than water. --Deusnoctum 17:45, 10 September 2007 (CDT)

Number?

What's the number of this trophy?

He aint heavy reference

Just out of curiosity how do we know this a reference to the song listed, and not to the book which is famous for this quote? GameWhino

  • Yeah, this is a perpetual problem with references to things that are themselves borrowings or references, but I'm going to bet in this case that the answer is "Because nobody has actually heard of that book, whereas the song topped the charts on both sides of the pond." What book are you thinking of? --Jonrock 01:34, 14 June 2007 (CDT)

Roe Fulkerson's "My Personal Pages" (his personal memoire). It was the title of a much reprinted article in the Kiwanis Magazine (It was proceding "The Swan" by Dahl in my 8th grade english textbook, hence my thinking it was a portion of a short story). This is also aparently where Edward Flanagan got the line that was used for Boys Town, which is what the Hollies reference in their song. --GameWhino

Has anyone tried seeing if there's a trophy for having 50+ familiars at 20 lbs each?

  • Jick has confirmed on many occasions that Black Hole Terrarium is the highest it's going to go. --Quietust (t|c) 10:26, 26 September 2007 (CDT)

Strategy

I did this one a while back. Don't know if it's worth mentioning in the page text, but here are some things you should do if going for this trophy.

Leveling up pets is slow and pricey. You will want to do it in The Cake-Shaped Arena, obviously, but also don't overlook the fact that pets which don't fight also count toward the total. It's worth spending some time adventuring with the various types of pet rocks to increase your total count. After all, it's much faster to get from 1-2 than from 19-20.

You need 400 experience to get a familiar to 20 lb. Optimistically, if you get 5 experience in every single combat, it will take 80 turns and 8000 meat for each familiar. With 25 familiars, this works out to 2000 turns in the arena and 200,000 meat.

However, the more familiars you have, the more turns you can shave off this. For instance, if you have 34 familiars then you only need to get most of them up to 15 lb. This requires 225 experience each, 45 turns each, 1530 turns in total (153,000 meat).

Obviously, then, you can improve your time by a lot as you add more familiars, so get every one you can afford to buy before you start. Use this page as a shopping list.

Best thing to do is level up everything you can to 10 or so, then start rotating arena familiars. Exercise your pet rock types while you do something else (for instance, daily bounty hunting), and keep leveling everything else evenly until you meet your goal.

As a side issue, if you feel like paying attention to this, you can recoup some of your money by paying attention to the mall price of familiar equipment. That way you can time your tenth arena turn to get the most valuable items. For instance, if you get a meat detector that's valued at over 4000 meat, it's better to get that than some many-eyed glasses that you have to autosell. --Kazim 11:28, 3 July 2008 (CDT)

I've been working on this trophy; rather than spend time and meat in the Cake-Shaped Area I've been doing my level 30 trophy and just take each familiar out in turn, get them up to 20 lbs. and then take out the next one. With a little box of fireworks or mayflower bouquet it seems to take less time to get up to 20. Cap'n Hector 12:18, 3 July 2008 (CDT)

Has this changed?

I have 29 familiars, totaling 627 lbs. All (except my 3 rocks) have at least 1 experience point, most have at least 200. The Black Hole trophy isn't available to me. Have the requirements for this trophy changed, or am I a fool who is missing something obvious? --Goobernostrum 22:37, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

627 lbs. from 29 familiars would imply an average of more than 20 lbs. per familiar, which isn't possible. Weight from equipment doesn't count towards the trophies. --Jasonharper 22:48, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Disregard my previous comment. I miscalculated my weights. As I suspected, am a fool :( --Goobernostrum 03:33, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Notes note

I strongly suspect the Stocking Mimic can count towards the total here (and for the other terrarium trophies) as per the homemade robot and other special weight familiars. Without one to test with I won't presume to edit the page, though. --Clovis Sangrail (talk) 23:05, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
