I opened 74 baskets and recorded individual results, and then ran a couple bash one-liners to give me some statistics on the data set. Here are the summaries:

• 24 two-item baskets; 18 three-item; 11 four-item; 21 five-item. (Average 3.4 items per basket.)
• A total of 44 puddings, 45 cakes, 46 chardonnay, 32 peppers, 37 hams, and 47 black&tans.

It's not clear whether there are any restrictions on item generation within the baskets, given such a small data set. I saw at most three of the same item in a single basket (e.g. the 6th basket I opened had 3 black&tans and 1 cake). For purpose of deciding the value of a basket, I think it's reasonable to assume (for now!) that:

• All items are equally likely.
• There are 2 to 5 items per basket, with each number of items being equally likely (average 3.5 items).

Dates

While the black pepper mechanic was announced several months ago, it has always been broken. Today (dec 9), it was actually implemented.-QuantumNightmare 03:31, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Pepper drop rate

Black pepper is most definitely not guaranteed after 5 baskets. I have used 60 baskets on a multi, and got a stretch of 11 baskets without a pepper, the 12th was. Perhaps the "at most 5 baskets to get a pepper" only really applies to the first 5 used in a day, or even the first 5 used in an ascension. --MindlessGames 12:57, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm facing a fried egg in the tower and have gone through at least a dozen baskets in the last two days, and no pepper. By "5 baskets", does it mean multi-using five baskets at once? Or does it mean you will get pepper by the fifth basket dropped? Cause I'm not feeling the joy here. --DynSkeet 04:22, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

• As MG and Club indicated/suggest before, the mechanic could be "guaranteed a pepper on the 5th basket used that ascension, if no other peppers obtained". So I'm guessing you used your pepper for something. Made it into long-pork sandwiches or something. Particularly likely if you're using something like mafia and are just picking whatever food appears highest on the adv or adv/full list without thinking about whether or not you need to hold onto some of the ingredients it requires. Sorry, but I am 100% certain that the mechanic for black pepper is not as described. Normally, I don't pay close enough attention to know for sure, but I just completed a contest run where I needed black pepper. Day 4, turn 560 I had a basket drop as I was unlocking the Black Market. On day 5, I obtained an additional 5 baskets, and it was only on the last (6th total) that I received black pepper. Perhaps the mechanic involves 5 in one day, perhaps baskets acquired through clovers don't count. (The 2nd, 3rd & 4th basket were clovered.) But it is NOT as simple as "5th basket each ascension guarantees pepper if not already acquired." (Also, yes, I reviewed my log just to be sure and I didn't make a long pork sandwich.) --StDoodle 17:01, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
