Initial Thoughts

how is this gotten? I saw something about "gnusto" earlier, but I haven't seen that anywhere else...

Please, use the second button from the right after you are done to mark who you are and at what time you made that comment.

Alrighty. The term "Gnusto" is something written on a parchment scrap you find in the fireplace prior to lighting the fire. What you do is type "Examine fireplace" and discover there's tinder on the logs, so "Examine tinder" and you'll pick up the Gnusto spell. Now, when you obtain the Cleesh spell, type "Gnusto Cleesh" to copy the spell to your character. You can still "Cleesh Giant" at the top of the 'tree', so don't worry.--Teenr0cker 19:45, 14 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)

  • I though you had to examine the parchment after examining the tinder to get gnusto. Oh, and this spell doesn't work on the Gargantulihc (sp), and i suspect that that is true of all the bosses.--Fireyflame 05:27, 15 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)
    • Having the parchment should be sufficient. -- Old Ned 02:53, 22 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)

Okay, here's a few things that people with this spell could try, if they feel like trying to spade CLEESH:

  • Does it work on bosses?
    • If so, do you still count as defeating the boss?
      • If both of these, do you still count as beating the quest (possible bug here)?
    • If it does not work on bosses, what text does it give on the attempt?
    • Remember to test it on Felonia, too.
    • Good thinking on the subboss testing, Fireyflame.
    • Remember to try the unnecessary boss - the epic hat boss.
      • You can CLEESH the epic hat boss. However, beating it only gives you the amphibian organ. You can fight again for the hat and quest completion.Shaventalz 05:57, 16 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)
  • Does it work in The Daily Dungeon?
    • If so, do you still count as passing the room?
  • Does it work on the Mimic?
    • If so, can you get the encounter again?
  • Does it work in Fernswarthy's Basement?
    • If so, do you still count as passing the room?
      • Doesn't seem to work on the Basement monsters (at least, not the one I got) Shaventalz 11:02, 15 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)
      • It works on the n-Dimensional Horror, but you do not pass the room if you CLEESH the enemy. --Voot 16:48, 5 January 2008 (CST)
  • Does it work on tower monsters?
  • Does it work on the shadow?
  • Does it give you a special chat command (i.e. "/cleesh $name" puts "/me turns $name into a small frog" into the chat, or something more creative)?

--Yiab 10:25, 15 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)

  • Does it work on ultra-rare monsters? Just kidding, that would be a stupid thing to do. --Crowther 15:13, 16 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)
  • CLEESH doesn't seem to work against the Daily Dungeon monsters, Felonia, or the Mimic in the DoD, it gives the same burping message as the cleeshed amphibians. Also, has anyone noted if the amphibians resulting from CLEESH change randomly for one particular monster or is it static? If each monster can only be cleeshed to one particular amphibian, then it might signal that certain special monsters can be cleeshed into special amphibians. --Yehman 16:04, 19 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)
    • I was able to get all three amphibians just by CLEESHing yetis. -- Old Ned 05:46, 27 February 2006 (CST)
  • Confirming that CLEESHing Topiary golems does not work, as mentioned below. I tried it twice today and got the burping message.--Nea 06:01, 27 February 2006 (CST)
  • Confirming that CLESSH works on all spectral pickle factory monsters --wintergreen 17:50, 01 April 2006 (GMT)
  • CLEESH does not work against Ed the Undying, or at least his first form.--Wr3cktangle 17:24, 18 May 2008 (CDT)
  • I noticed that after CLEESHing a monster, any combat action I take immediately afterwards results in the "you twiddle your thumbs" message. I can attack, cast a spell, etc. normally after that first action. I'm using Combat Action Bars, I haven't checked to see if that happens using the old combat form. Is this happening to anyone else? --Olaf the Hungry 00:36, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
    • Same here. I suspect it may be a Greasemonkey thing trying to load pages between combat turns, but I keep forgetting to turn it off to check. --Bagatelle 19:19, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
      • Well, looks like it's been fixed now. --Olaf the Hungry 23:14, 22 June 2008 (CDT)

Usefulness/strategy

There are a couple of uses for CLEESHing that I've come up with.

  1. avoiding combat with the mimics in the barrel full of barrels by just cleeshing them.
  2. If say you need something only dropped by the alphabet giant and you can't defeat the other giants, you can cleesh whatever encounters you have that you don't want.
  3. Shooting for random encounters rather than fighting- If you can avoid being hit first, you can turn all the monsters on the extreme slope, for instance, into amphibians and just get the item drops from random encounters. The same is true of the Harem, The Pirates Cove
  4. Shooting for neccessary random encounters-- appears to work in the deep fat friars quest. In this quest, defeating these monsters and getting their stuff is unneccessary for completing the quest. Similarly for the Airship and Giant Castle.

-if it works on the hedge maze golems, then it would be useful for those times when you've worked out the puzzle, and you just have to get the key without running into a golem. It also might work for undefiling the crypt, in part. Lotusduck 16:59, 19 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)

  • I have no idea what you are talking about Lotusduck. If you've finished the puzzle and have a piece, you get the key, not a golem. If you lose your last piece on the last turn of the puzzle, you get a golem, because you don't have a piece. CLEESH it, and you still won't have a peice. It's moot, since CLEESH doesn't work on the hedge golem anyway. I forgot to heal before fighting him and so I did a CLEESH and just got beaten up. --Crowther 17:54, 21 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)
    • I'm not sure what you're talking about here either, Lotusduck, but it certainly can be useful in the hedge maze (as with any other tough area). when you get an encounter where 2 hits from you will kill the monster but 2 hits from the monster will kill you, cleesh it if you lose initiative.--Yiab 21:26, 22 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)
  • If CLEESHing one of The Cyrpt mini-bosses (e.g. the Gargantulihc) did work, it probably would not help you complete the Undefile the Cyrpt Quest, as you would not have defeated the mini-boss, but a toad.
    • I think what he meant with that was you could CLEESH the non-boss monsters in the crypt, saving you a bit of stress.--Smirror 00:14, 2 April 2006 (CST)

Any use for the smashed frog, eye of newt, etc? --Unnatural20 00:44, 29 March 2006 (CST)

Usage on NS

It says that CLEESH cannot be used on the NS, both forms. Shouldn't it say all forms, since there are three forms? --Sevault 01:17, 10 December 2006 (CST)

    • The page says two because on the third form spells are not usable. --Fuzzy1994 19:37, 19 February 2007 (CST)
      • As of a little while ago, Cobain Dougans managed to circumvent usage of the wand of nangmar on the 3rd form. He did this by using an Evil Teddy Bear. This also allowed him to case skills like Entangling Noodles, etc. So, spells are usable, but you need an evil teddy bear, but you will need high stats to be able to actually kill the 3rd form of the NS. http://forums.kingdomofloathing.com/viewtopic.php?t=76549 --Coolguy00001 (t|c) 21:21, 19 February 2007 (CST)

Perming?

It says if you perm this skill one cannot use it earlier in the leaflet quest, does that mean outside of that quest you can use it or do you have to wait until you finish the quest to be able to use it at all?

  • It means you can't use it within the leaflet until you actually read the scroll. --Quietust (t|c) 18:38, 13 February 2007 (CST)

Item Drops

While adventuring on The Penultimate Fantasy Airship, I encountered an Irritating Series of Random Encounters.
I hit it with Disco Dance II: Electric Boogaloo, followed by a Disco Face Stab (which brought Disco Bleeding into effect).
Right after the face stab, I CLEESHed it (into a salamander).
In the same round as the CLEESHing, Disco Bleeding did 15 damage and killed the salamander.
My Baby Gravy Fairy did a little dance, and the salamander dropped a cocoa eggshell fragment, which is one of the items the non-CLEESHed monster would have dropped!

Just did it again, on a sk8 gnome from The eXtreme Slope. Put the Disco Bleeding on it through Disco Dance of Doom and Disco Face Stab, CLEESHed (which killed it), and it dropped t8r tots.
ALSO, I gained stat points as if it was the original monster. --BaruMonkey 10:12, 17 May 2007 (CDT)

  • This reeks of bug to me. Have you reported it? --Bagatelle 20:54, 19 May 2007 (CDT)
  • Hadn't thought of that. It's now been reported. --BaruMonkey 14:08, 22 May 2007 (CDT)

War!

Does CLEESHing warriors in the level 12 quest count towards the kill count? As in, Naughty Sorority Nurses especially? CaptainSpam 14:34, 22 May 2008 (CDT)

  • This page says "Casting CLEESH does not count that battle towards the number of enemies killed." --Club (#66669) (Talk) 16:52, 23 May 2008 (CDT)
  • No. --Flargen 18:27, 23 May 2008 (CDT)
  • Was CLEESHing Naughty Sorority Nurses two days ago and ended up CLEESHing 8 monsters to try to make my counters 'proper', counting each amphibian as 1 instead of the normal 8 I was getting per kill due to my goals. Did get my Wossname, so either CLEESHed mobs count as 1 kill, or it recalculated based on the picture. --Theraze 00:30, 12 Nov 2010 (CST)

War-related: Flyered monsters don't appear to keep their 'advertised' status if CLEESHed. I advertised on a Knob Goblin mad scientist, CLEESHed it into a frog, then advertised again. If someone cares to spade, and then add it to the main page... --Pastangum 20:27, 19 June 2008 (CDT)

Hobopolis

I tried to CLEESH Hodgman, The Hoboverlord and failed. Has anyone tried on any other Hobopolis mobs/bosses? I suspect that all the bosses are immune, but haven't tested mobs yet. --Caphector 19:09, 27 June 2008 (CDT)

You can CLEESH hobopolis mobs; they don't appear in logs. Cap'n Hector 13:48, 26 July 2008 (CDT)

Original items drop?

"# A CLEESHed monster does not drop any of the items that it would originally have dropped before being CLEESHed unless, at the time of the CLEESHing, the monster has an effect on it which causes it to take continual damage (i.e. Disco Bleeding)."

I tried it with Sing and with Colon Annihilation Hot Sauce (huge dent in my meat pocket :/) and neither one did their damage after the CLEESH. It's considered a different battle (I could entangle again). --Raijinili 11:14, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Random?

Is it really random which monster you get? I doubt it. Can't get a newt to save my life. LMTR14 16:17, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

ML NOT WORK! WAAAH!

  • i've got +50ML on against CLEESH monsters, and i'm still only getting 1 substat. wtf? --Evilkolbot 21:46, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
    • Yeah, that's normal. CLEESHing anything will ALWAYS yield a monster that gives 1 substat when defeated, regardless of any sources of ML running. The reason for this is that ML is applied at the start of combat. Changing the monster's form by CLEESH, therefore, does NOT cause stats to get re-calculated from ML increasers. --Wrldwzrd89 22:21, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
      • Thing is, it used to apply. The original 1-day run by Mr. Bing (is that right?) cleeshes once or twice and gets reasonable substats because he was running a ton of +ML. It changed at some point. --Flargen 22:23, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
        • Does Memory of Aggressiveness work, then, since it's applied after combat begins? Cleesh > Base Pair > ??? > Profit.--Erich 22:41, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Zombie Slayer CLEESHing

It looks like you can still learn CLEESH as a zombie master. It states that CLEESH costs 10 zombies, but when used, it doesn't actually decrease the number of zombies in your hoard, making it free while you're in a zombie slayer run. --Dinomage 20:28, 22 August 2012 (CEST)
