Talk:Camp Scout backpack

From A KoL Wiki

Wow, this backpack is impressive ~ most certainly the best back item thus far ... looks like the spaders have work to do ~ how often does it drop its bonus items though? - AvangionQ 06:55, 3 July 2012 (CEST)

A few adventures into an HC run

A little package floats in on a silver parachute. A note attached reads "The CSA notes that you are not wearing your CSA-issued backpack. While the CSA acknowledges the possibility of equipment loss in a combat situation, the CSA would also like to remind you that CSA membership, once initiated, is compulsory and permanent." You acquire an item: bag of GORP--Wojo 07:15, 3 July 2012 (CEST)

It's certainly looking to be 1-3 combats for the first item drop, then an additional +1-3 combats for each item dropped after that. I missed the first couple, then it was 8, 11, 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 24 for the next ones, and I'll still be getting some more, and adding additional points as I go through with another account.--Mstieler 11:19, 3 July 2012 (CEST)

I wrote a Greasemonkey script to monitor backpack drops, and for the past couple of days, it's looking more like 2-4 for the first drop and an additional 1-3 for each subsequent drop. That would make it an average of 168 combats to get up to QWOP instead of the 156 that I put on the page. I'll monitor it for another day or two and update the page if this continues to be the case. (If anyone wants the script, let me know and I'll post it somewhere.) --Johnny Treehugger 18:05, 17 July 2012 (CEST)
  • Sure looks to me like (N+1)^2. Also, seems like free fights increment the counter as well, because I got one fighting the 2nd of three consecutive Black Crayon monsters. Will continue to monitor.--Davidmac 01:38, 31 July 2012 (CEST)
  • Unless it's a bug, I have not gotten any bags of QWOP during my hardcore run. Spent 240 with no bags in my inventory. Argus 09:52, 11 August 2012 (CEST)

Just to be clear, the final three messages listed on the page give items randomly selected from all the other drops, correct? If so please tell me so it can be added to the page.--Tombot 17:26, 3 July 2012 (CEST)

  • Yeah. From what I've seen, it drops one of each of the items, in the order on the page, and then starts picking one of the three 'random' messages, which give you random drops. --KingBobson 06:00, 5 July 2012 (CEST)

Can someone who has ascended this july confirm whether the item drops start over from the beginning in a new ascension (including the 1-3 combats thing), or if the number just keeps going up forever? (in which case this is actually not a great item of the month >.<) --HikaruYami 18:46, 9 July 2012 (CEST)

  • I ascended last Thursday, and I'm 99% sure that yes, it started again from the bag of GORP on ascension. I didn't check to see how often things were dropping but I'm pretty sure that reset also. --Johnny Treehugger 20:41, 9 July 2012 (CEST)
    • Thank you! I expected this to be the functionality, but I wanted to be sure :) --HikaruYami 00:57, 10 July 2012 (CEST)

references

couldn't the silver parachute also be a reference to the Hunger Games? --NataliaM 19:23, 3 July 2012 (CEST)

  • delivery by prachute is common enough that this isn't a reference to anything. acme corp would occasionally use it, iirc. as far as thg goes, as far as i can tell it's one giant rip off and not a primary source of references to anything. i don't care how good a film it is, even if it has beat takeshi in every frame unless there's a scene with five schoolgirls, a kitchen table and a gun it's just fail fail fail. --Evilkolbot 19:43, 3 July 2012 (CEST)
    • I wondered about that too. I got bored and gave up part of the way into chapter 2, but my wife is a huge fan of the books and from what she told me it didn't sound like a HG reference any more than a generic parachute drop reference. I was planning to pop in here and mention that after sleeping, but was pleasantly surprised to see it gone already. --Kitsunegami 01:40, 4 July 2012 (CEST)
    • you being really angry at the hunger games doesn't necessarily mean this isn't a reference to it.--NataliaM 15:21, 5 July 2012 (CEST)
  • If anything, the silver parachute is probably a reference to golden parachutes. --Guyy 01:49, 4 July 2012 (CEST)
  • In the book, and I presume the movie as well, supply drops arrive specifically on silver parachutes. Considering this was a recent mass-market novel and movie, I think it's a rather clear reference, and it's not like KoL is "above" making pop culture references. --Pronell 05:35, 4 July 2012 (CEST)
    1. i'm not angry, it's just i love love love battle royale. imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but theft can get you killed.
    2. it's not that skully wasn't inspired by thg to use parachutes, it's just that we try to note only primary references. delivery by parachute is a common trope and not unique to thg, so no reference. if you're convinced that's what he meant, ask on the radio. as with the moveable feast, he'll probably back you up. --Evilkolbot 16:54, 5 July 2012 (CEST)
    • If it isn't a Hunger Games ref, then why are the parachutes silver? --BaronVonWurlitzer 08:00, 8 July 2012 (CEST)
      • not enough to go by to declare it a reference Doglord 12:39, 8 July 2012 (CEST)
        • Not knowing that much about the Hunger Games, and not being invested in it in any way, it seems rather specific to me, unless silver parachutes have been a thing in something else (including reality). Notsupposedtobehere 12:54, 8 July 2012 (CEST)
          • Well, silver or metallic-looking mylar parachutes are often used in toys and model rocketry. --Prestige 04:15, 11 July 2012 (CEST)
  • It just seems some people are trying really hard to make this NOT a Hunger Games reference, when it was the first thing I thought of when I saw silver parachute, and it IS the most obvious reference being made. --NataliaM 17:26, 11 July 2012 (CEST)
  • Maybe somebody good at tables could make this page look much nicer, like the clip art page

display case

Does the backpack only work during hardcore from the inventory or hangks? Does it not work from a display case? Discordance 19:32, 20 November 2012 (CET)
