Talk:Cookie-baking Thing from Beyond Time

From A KoL Wiki

References: The thing is pretty much solidly HP Lovecraft. It is *NOT* an illithid/Mind Flayer, despite what people might think.--Terry 00:48, 4 December 2006 (CST)

  • I agree on the Lovecraftian link. The link to SciFi's Dr. Who and the Ood should be removed. And, in regards to: "a being who said it came from "beyond time," which the Doctor found impossible to accept." In fact, it claimed "before time"; when the Doctor was talking about the rules we make for ourselves, he mentioned, "If it said it came from beyond time, that I could accept, but before time? That doesn't fit my rules." (Yes, I paraphrased from memory. It's not on my DVR any more.) --Terion 09:31, 6 December 2006 (CST)

This: "It tries to grab you with a tentacle, but you're not having any of that funny business," could be a reference to hentai and the use of tentacles in some *cough* funny business.--Devdogg 15:09, 5 December 2006 (CST)

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. Good ol' tentacle rape jokes... --Missingno 18:35, 6 December 2006 (CST)

- It is quite undoubtedly a reference to Lovecraft's Cthulhu. The KoL text references him as an old god. In Lovecraft's myth cycle, Cthulhu is a Great Old One, a supreme being worshipped as a god.

"Nor is it to be thought that man is either the oldest or the last of earth's masters, or that the common bulk of life and substance walks alone. The Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the Old Ones shall be. Not in the spaces we know, but between them." - H. P. Lovecraft, The Dunwich Horror

I agree that several of the "references" should be removed - especially the latest one regarding Hellboy. Hellboy uses references to Lovecraft's work, and the monster is Lovecraftian in its nature. It merely makes itself redundant in relation to the reference to Lovecraft.--Kuranes 16:18, 6 December 2006 (CST)

I think the basic gist here is that, while yes, all of these are technically valid references, most of the things supposedly referenced are themselves references to Cthulu. --MrPaulie 17:01, 6 December 2006 (CST)

It's clearly been said a lot of times, but I just have to add myself that the number of references to squid-faced things here is silly. His appearance is undoubtedly a Lovecraft reference, connecting him to mind flayers (who were inspired by Cthulu) and Zoidberg (who's just like that because, I presume, it's funny to look at it) are getting out of hand. But somebody more knowledgable with pop culture than I should do the editting, as I'm not sure where exactly the references are overlapping. --Nifty Nobu 18:16, 8 December 2006 (CST)
