Talk:Down at the Hatch
From A KoL Wiki
Subsequent openings seems to release the more powerful critters for several turns. I've had normal monsters appear in the second adventure after, and powerful appear 4 adventures after. It feels like there is a diminishing chance to meet a powerful critter after opening this. Transcendent Olfaction on a powerful critter can keep encounters likely for longer; I encountered unholy diver on the 10th encounter (after 18 adventures) after opening the hatch the third time. -- user:Wagr 13:22, 5 December 2008 (MDT)
- It seems to me that opening it causes crate crabs to be replaced with mine crabs and sailors with divers. The mer-kin remains the same. The only question is, how long does it last? Is it X number of turns? Turns spent in the zone? Or number of these monsters fought? Anecdotally, I'd guess it lasts for 20 adventures (not combats) each time you open it.--Prestige 00:21, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Might not be part of the mechanic and I didn't pay close attention, but I think I started getting sailors after getting beaten up by a diver or mine crab. Might not be a strict 20 turn limit either --Shoptroll 04:03, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- I got a sailor on the 8th event after opening the hatch, that's 14 adventures between opening and the sailor. -- user:Wagr 12:20, 6 December 2008
- It might be an UNLIMITED change for mine crab/imitation crabs. I have now not seen a mine crab for more than 200 turns (the last 100 played with fishy... might have been even more) without opening any hatch again. Maybe also a number of X "other" enemies is released and you fight them just as a normal combat queue monster and after each fight their number is reduced by 1? (Kind of like the zombie dancers in hobopolis)--DerMagus 11:32, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- DerMagus, I thought of that also. So, after opening the hatch, I went off and played elsewhere for 20 turns. Returning to the wreck, I encountered a crate crab. Seems it's turns, not released monsters. Further spading results indicate that I get 15-21 adventures with the powerful critters. Usually, I get a normal sailor or crate crab again on the 9th or 10th encounter after. -- user:Wagr 12:16, 7 December 2008 MDT
- I think Wagr is correct, I havn't counted exactly, but after opening the door I encounter unholy divers and mine crabs for about 20 turns, instead of sailers and cargo crabs and afterwards I never see them again. Even when I olfaction one of the two, they never come up again after ~20 turns, and I get sailors as if I was 20 turns down in On The Trail. - user:Fineldar 5:08, 2 January 2009 GMT -6
- I've spent ~300-350 adventures in the wreck after rescuing Little Brother, with no sign of Big Brother. Is this normal, or just RNG hate? --PFC Walker 01:16, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
- When you say "no sign," have you gotten the non-combat at The Wreck of the Edgar Fitzsimmons, or did you try visiting The Sea Monkee Castle to see if Big Bro's already been freed? --BagatelleT/C 02:24, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
- No, I haven't rescued Big Brother yet. I've only rescued Little Brother, who told me Big Brother was missing and that he was at the wreck. And the reason I say there's no sign of Big Brother is because I HAVEN'T GOTTEN THIS ADVENTURE YET (which I though would have been obvious - and which is the whole reason for me asking if it's normal to spend that much time looking for him, or if I've just had a run of bad luck). --PFC Walker 15:42, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- This may be a noncombat with something like a 5% appearance rate, so if you are running any +combat (hound dog?) it may not show up. Try loading up +noncombat. --Prestige 23:27, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

- Is the effect of turning sailors into divers and crate crabs to mine crabs removed with rollover? I had only spent 5 turns (10 adventures) before rollover hit, and after rollover they were gone. Can someone else confirm this? --Fryguy9 02:29, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- Fryguy, I am experiencing this also. Opened the hatch as my last adventure yesterday, first today is a drowned sailor. Marking it on the page. --Devjoe 13:08, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
