Talk:Familiar Names
So I made this page. If you think it's nonsense, ... delete it :) If anyone thinks it's useful though, I'll edit the familiar action lines on the familiar pages to link to Familiar Names, like (some) combat messages on the adventure pages do. Anyway -
This alternative recipe might apply, but I haven't come across any familiars with names ending in "rn" yet, so I don't know (somebody else might?)... --NewZorkBat 04:36, 5 January 2006 (Central Standard Time)

Possible references in the random names: for example "Tron" (not sure it's worth mentioning because of it's random status, but then again, someone created this algorithm, so, hm.) --NewZorkBat 04:36, 5 January 2006 (Central Standard Time)
I just got my ADD, and it has called itself "Gofflesby", which lies outside anything here.--Fireyflame 09:58, 30 January 2006 (Central Standard Time)
- My brand-new stinky gravy fairy named itself "Grofflesby" - looks like there's more variation than I thought :) I'll sort this out later... --NewZorkBat 05:52, 11 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)
- I encountered a "Tofflesby" now as well, so I added the "offlesby"s to the recipe in the article. --NewZorkBat 06:22, 14 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)
- I seem to have a Starfish named Trog-dor (with that obvious reference there). As the account in question is open to an entire clan for usage -- and the fact that it used to belong to a friend that was a Homestar Runner fan -- I question the validity of it. However, y'know, might be important info.--Azu 16:05, 21 February 2007 (CST)
- I just used an unwound clockwork grapefruit, and there is some new text that says "You decide to name him 6655321". This is related to the adjustment to familiar output when placed into the terrarium that was announced today. Would someone with knowledge in wikicode please spade and update pages accordingly? Thank you. --Grogum 23:28, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
- I just placed my reassembled blackbird in the Terrarium, and it named it "Boulder", which doesnt fit into this algorithm. this one likely needs to be redone, as it also doesnt include the "offlesby" endings either. --Gannstboy 23:36, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
- I wonder if we need to have every possible default familiar name listed, when we have the handy-dandy table that got put in when the page was created. It's long, and I'm personally not convinced it adds anything. Is that just me? --Chyld (talk) 16:57, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
Accents
- I don't know if anyone else has had this but if I try to include an 'è' or any other character which isn't actually a "letter" it will do a jumble of letters. So for example I called my ADD "Dèwii", it then became "Dèwii", then when I hit rename with Dèwii as it's name, it became "DÃ¨wii" and then, "DÃÃ" and then it just stays as that. I can rename it "DÃÃ" as many times as I want to and it remains DÃÃ. It follows the exact same pattern when named anything with 'è' in it. I haven't played around with any other letters or if this is important enough to mention or someone wants to fiddle around with it and other possible characters like à and the like and we could get to the bottom of this! --Allean 04:16, 8 June 2007 (CDT)
- Update: Dàwson follows almost the same pattern but starts with a ' '(space) instead of a '¨' in the second naming so ends up being named 'DÃÃ' ie the same as Dèwii becomes. --Allean 04:19, 8 June 2007 (CDT)
- Accents used to be allowed, but were de-implemented some time ago, as shows in this forum post. --Bagatelle 17:56, 8 June 2007 (CDT)
- Sorry, I should have been clearer, I'm aware that this happens and I'd read about it before and had forgotten, so I tried it on my familiar and then noticed a pattern and asked here if people thought it should have a section on the page itself. Though just pointing someone to a forum link isn't too helpful as this is supposed to be separate to the forums, I just found some information but wasn't sure if it was really important/interesting enough to be included here.--Allean 06:00, 12 June 2007 (CDT)

Late update to an existing section: Fig bucket just changed the page "note name encoding (per Quietust's note in the bugged ...)". The note on bugged bön±Ã©t makes sense, but the note here does not:
- Some accented characters can used used in familiar names. In general characters you type are encoded as UTF-8, but understood as ISO-8859-1, with &'s removed. For example, entering the character "ø" (c3 b8 in UTF-8) will be translated to ø (two characters, c3 and b8 in ISO-8859-1).
I'm not exactly sure what happens to familiar names, but I know my i18n stuff. I can tell you the difference between charset, "character set", and "character encoding". Here's what I think that note is supposed to mean:
- Some accented characters can used used in familiar names. In particular familiar names must be ISO-8859-1. Attempting to use names in other charsets (many web browsers use UTF-8) will result in the bits being interpreted as ISO-8859-1, with buggy results.

- "Buggy" I suppose, but also deterministic---I was trying to emphasize that it's a direct translation from the UTF-8 bytes. Your text is better though. --Fig bucket 00:44, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
- The ampersand is apparently no longer being replaced with an n. --zzqqppmm
Profanity?
I know the article says "any profanity", but I just started my first bad moon run, got a Black Cat, and successfully named it "Little Bitch". Is "bitch" not considered profanity anymore? --Emtu 18:15, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
- It's rude, but I don't think it was ever "profane". The 1913 Webster, for example, doesn't call it out as such:
1. The female of the canine kind, as of the dog, wolf, and fox. 2. An opprobrious name for a woman, especially a lewd woman. --Pope. (That dictionary edition is used a lot online since it is (a) out of copyright, (b) unabridged, and (c) digitized.) --Club (#66669) (Talk) 19:44, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
Do we have a list of these? I've had a familiar that had the name changed to [profanity] a long time ago, but I cannot imagine what I tried to name it. I have never figured it out. --Plater (t|c) 20:53, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Name Spading
Thanks to the recent trivial update that lets us get the random names multiple times, I've generated some data. I haven't sorted through the Goth Kid and the Grimstone Golem because I'm just lazy, but this is what I've gotten. I'll post more later. — Cool12309 (talk) 19:23, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Aug 4 2014 update
The trivial update today -- "August 04, 2014 - The default familiar name generator has been given a fresh coat of arms. Paint arms. Paint." But I don't see any effect on the default name generator. Anyone notice anything different? --Aelfinn (talk) 23:03, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think the random name generator has been greatly expanded, and the following update made it work with "Manage Familiar Names". I just had it randomly generate "Goxanne" and "Tonjamin" along with the usual random names. Daltonator (talk) 20:23, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Familiars I Don't Own
While I've got an okay set of familiars, I don't have many of the early ones (Pixie, Cheshire, Jill, Hand Turkey, Crimbo Elf, Baby Yeti, Feather Bo Constrictor, Emo Squid, Dodecapede) nor the Feral Kobold, Amok Putty, or Martini Guy. Those should be checked to see if they have new name generators as well.
I'm also gathering the data for the Grim Brother, but that might be a little complicated. And dark.-Foggy (talk) 20:47, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
- Feral Kobold and Amok Putty are both confirmed to follow the normal naming pattern.-Foggy (talk) 05:59, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
Name Spading the Cat Burglar
My default Cat Burglar's name was Heisting Pussy; felt compelled to investigate the name generation lol. Ran it about 300 times, here's what I got --Tetravirus (talk) 11:52, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
Yule Pup
Default name I got was "Season's Duke", so it looks like the Yule Pup uses different name generation. --Sajewers (talk) 13:42, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
Mine got the default name "Crimbo Oliver"--Butterflygirlkmc (talk) 14:23, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
