I'm guessing this is a reference to the glass ceiling, the political term describing "the unseen, yet unbreakable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the upper rungs of the corporate ladder, regardless of their qualifications or achievements," hence its breaking resulting in the promotion of the female factory worker.
