Talk:Gothy Handwave
Don't know where to put these things in the wiki page:
- Some texts when using in quest:
It seems like there's something to this guy's movements that might be useful to you, if only you could find the right moment to focus on.
- Use in the same combat second time:
Meh, you can't bring yourself to do that goofy move twice in one fight. You have some self-respect, after all.
It seems to have different use texts on different monster:
- breakdancing raver, after getting the message:"The raver drops to the ground and starts spinning his legs wildly. He's much too far away from you to actually hit you, but it still looks pretty impressive.":
"You're actually pretty impressed by that spinning-kick move he just pulled on you. Despite your deep-rooted instinct for self-preservation, you'd kind of like to see it again."
"Once again, you ponder the low whirling spin-kick that the raver has just used on you. You think you almost see how it works, if you could just verify the foot movements and how he shifts his weight... "
"Aha! The hand goes down there, and the right leg swings out that way... now you've got it. You grin to yourself, ready to give these guys a taste of their own medicine. You acquire a skill: Break It On Down"
And after this one I get:"You come to the conclusion that, basically, your enemy is a douchebag."
- running man, after getting the message:"The raver turns and runs away. You watch him go, and soon realize he isn't actually running anywhere. He glances over his shoulder, sees you watching him with an eyebrow raised, and looks embarrassed.":
"You ponder the movements that the raver used to appear to be running away while staying in the same place. A certain arm movement, a glide to the step... you think you nearly have it down."
"There -- that's what you were looking for, that particular motion of the knees that makes the false run-away so deceptive. Now you're ready to show these guys how a real master of deception works. You acquire a skill: Run Like the Wind"
And after this one I get:"You come to the conclusion that, basically, your enemy is a douchebag."
- pop-and-lock raver, after getting the message:"The raver's movements suddenly became spastic and jerky. The weird rhythmic effect is puzzling, but you make yourself feel better by calling him a spaz and a jerk.":
"You think some more about the weird, jerky move the raver just used on you. It seems pretty easy, it's all just a matter of getting timing exactly right..."
"Ah! You see it now -- the jerky movements lull an opponent into a certain rhythm, leaving them unprepared for a final attack off the beat. It's time to show these guys what a real dance-master can do. You acquire a skill: Pop and Lock It"
And after this one I get:"You come to the conclusion that, basically, your enemy is a douchebag."

I stuck 'em in a decent order for now. Hope someone who knows better about formatting comes along soon to fix the page up. --Kilyle 10:18, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know how to alter its category or anything, but this skill cannot be permed.--Bob452 16:31, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
Regarding having to study the same monster multiple times in a row: Nope, I just got Run Like the Wind on one turn, and the very next turn got Pop and Lock It--Avandor 23:32, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
Yeah... after finally getting Break it on Down, my next two fights let me immediately get Run Like the Wind and then Pop and Lock It. Maybe it's something like 3 times on each and then after that the next time will always succeed?--Parmeisan 17:28, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

The average time it takes is from 5-7 for each individual user. All averages together are ~6.4.
Do you think using it with different specials from the same monster has any effect?--JohnAnon 22:04, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
- Unless you're talking about their special hit and miss messages as different, each monster only has one attack against which this is useful. --TimRem 18:51, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm really not sure if the above table counts the initial use and the final use, so...
- Run like the wind: 1 initial, 1 studying, 1 learning.
- Break it on down: 1 initial, 3 studying, 1 learning.
- Pow and lock it: 1 initial, 3 studying, 1 learning.

you're going at it all wrong
It always takes 3 tries to get the skill with gothy handwave. thing is: First you need to use gothy handwave to become aware of the dance moves of your opponent. So the first use is always effective.
The second and third times you use Gothy handwave must be in succession. Twice in a row for the same opponent. Otherwise your disco bandit "forgets" what he's learned, or more precisely loses his concentration.
for example: If you use the handwave against a runner, then a breakdancer, and then a runner again, you only need to use it once more for the runner skill. BUT! if you use it against the pop-and-lock raver instead, your disco bandit forgets what he learned from the runner, so you'll have to use it twice against the runner in a row instead of once.
Note that the first use of this skill against an opponent will never be forgotten.
Now someone please add this (explained shorter) to the skill's description:)

- I did try this (second and third time in succession against the running man) but did not learn the skill. --Hurax 18:53, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
- I tried it without success, but forgot to comment here. I don't believe it is correct either. Or it isn't explained accurately enough for me to reproduce. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 05:13, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
- This did not work for me either AeroSigma

- It might take less time if the second through final are all done in succession, though, has this been tried? Not necessarily 3 tries per skill, but we might get better results. Morgoth1145 15:21, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
It is definitely possible to learn a skill without fighting the same opponent twice in a row; as this was the case for all three I acquired this ascension. So I don't believe this condition is either necessary or sufficient. --Professor Why 09:08, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
- I encountered eight Running mans in a row and Gothy Handwaved them all, but I didn't get anything. I then Gothy Handwaved the other two monsters, and on the next Running Man I Gothy Handwaved and got the skill.
- I'm guessing that you have to use Gothy Handwave on each enemy once before you can learn the skill? --Deus Ex Machina 04:27, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Well if you look a little above your post you will see that learning the skill can take from 4 to 11 turns to get--Icon315 04:54, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
- That's because they were (probably) doing to wrong - you need to use Gothy Handwave against the same monster several times in a row.
- After getting Run Like the Wind, I got Pop and Lock It and Break It On Down in four turns each. --Deus Ex Machina 22:14, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm removing the note because it's simply not true, or at least not anymore. Used the handwave exclusively on running men, took 7 uses. Then, breakdancers, again 7. Finally the pop-and-lockers, 4. --Laytruce (talk) 16:53, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
