Talk:Grue egg omelette

From A KoL Wiki

This food is a quest item. That means it gets removed from your inventory when you Ascend, so you can't just pull it and eat it when you start your new run. You can still pull the ingredients, but it'll cost you 2 pulls per omelette, plus whatever you use to cook the finished product(s). Devious. Secondly, based on the food's description test, some folks were speculating whether or not it gives you more stat points depending on the phases of the moons. I think this deserves some testing.--IMJack 00:57, 14 February 2006 (Central Standard Time)

Stop eating them ! Is a quest item, we should find it a use. I'm gonna wait until black moons and go to the Suspicious looking guy. --Fernando Bono 11:19, 15 April 2006 (CDT)

If "this is the second consumable food that is a Quest Item," what's the first one? I know about the "around the worlds," but what are the others? Should we create a "consumable Quest Item" page? --Iason 17:58, 23 June 2006 (CDT)

Aah. The bowl of oriole's nest soup. Any others? --Iason 18:05, 23 June 2006 (CDT)

With both moons dark (), I got

You gain 25 Adventures.

I agree - the moons seem actually to have no effect on this omelette, other than the standard stat day bonus. --Gothhenge 08:28, 29 March 2006 (CST)

Myst day: You eat the grue egg omelette. You feel like you just got back from Soviet Russia. You gain 27 Adventures.

You gain 39 Fortitude.

You gain 57 Wizardliness. You gain a Mysticality point!

You gain 44 Chutzpah. --Luos 02:57, 12 May 2006 (CDT)

~Um... How about the description was just a reference to the fact that a Grue is more likely to attack when it's dark? Come on. Even I got that one... 20:32, 7 June 2006 (EST)

Zork Reference

--Databyss 08:43, 12 January 2007 (CST) From the description:

"Maybe if it was completely dark, you'd be more likely to enjoy eating it.

Turnabout is fair play, after all."

This is in reference to the grue from the Zork games that has the following line:

"It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue."

  • 1. There's already a reference to the Grue familiar, which in turn has that same reference (though paraphrased). Realistically, though, we should probably put a direct reference instead of an indirect one.
    2. Put your signature at the end of your comments, not at the beginning. Like this. --Quietust (t|c) 08:54, 12 January 2007 (CST)

Not Soviet Russia?

When this item was added, the Yakov reference seemed plainly obvious to everyone - "You feel like you just got back from Soviet Russia" being a blatant reference to the Yakov-style joke "[anywhere but Soviet Russia,] you have been eaten by a grue. In Soviet Russia, grue has been eaten by YOU!"

Now, out of nowhere, both RyokoYahagi and Evilkolbot claim that this is NOT a reference. I demand an explanation. --Quietust 13:44, 4 May 2006 (CDT)

Soviet Russia, but not Yakov Smirnoff

The Yakov Smirnoff Russian Reveral routine follows a strict formula. It's always "You do B to A. In Soviet Russia, A does B to you." The text doesn't follow that formula, doesn't mention grues eating people, and isn't even about grues. If grue egg omelettes normally go around eating people, I'll reconsider. If this is supposed to be a Russian Reversal, why do you feel like you "just got back from" Soviet Russia? Why don't you feel like you're in Soviet Russia?

On the other hand, the description talks about how gray and lumpy and awful-looking the omlette is. Soviet Russia had a widespread reputation for being cold and gray and dismally utilitarian. You eat this horrible gray food and feel like you were in Soviet Russia. It seemed pretty straightforward to me. Sometimes a reference to Soviet Russia is just a reference to Soviet Russia.

I guess I can see how someone might come up with the Yakov Smirnov thing, but it seems like a stretch to me. Now, how Evilkolbot came to the conclusion that it wasn't a reference to anything is something only he can explain. --RyokoYahagi 14:44, 4 May 2006 (CDT)

  • someone put the yakov smirnoff reference back in. i disagreed with that alone, since it's not there. --Evilkolbot 17:23, 4 May 2006 (CDT)

Hey guys, just because it doesn't follow Smirnoff's formula doesn't mean it's not a refrence to him. You're overthinking this. It's Smirnoff. Grues normally eat you, but now you're eating a grue, so hence the "soviet russa" remark. Ryanbomber 05:20, 25 May 2006 (CDT)

It's worth pointing out that, "In Soviet Russia X Ys YOU!" is a very common Slashdot meme, and always follows that form when used there. I would wager that for every 100 people who know this bit, 99 of them first saw it on Slashdot. I've been reading that site for about 9 years now, and have seen the "Soviet Russia" meme for just as long, but I had never heard of Yakov Smirnoff until I read this article! If there's no objection in a day or so (Seeing as this discussion is old and crusted over), I'll edit the reference on the main page. Paulie Astaire 01:12, 7 June 2008 (CDT)

But the slashdot thing is itself referring to Smirnoff, thus is the actual reference. And I'm quite certain that TPTB are more familiar with Smirnoff than slashdot (there's a single item in the game with a standing Slashdot reference, and dozens with a Smirnoff reference). --Flargen 01:22, 7 June 2008 (CDT)
Still, would it hurt to add, "There is also a common Slashdot meme of the same form, itself descended from Smirnoff's routine."? That was more my point, as referenced by my comment about how I'm sure a lot of players will be more aware of Slashdot than of Smirnoff. --Paulie Astaire 01:26, 7 June 2008 (CDT)
Uh...what? I knew it was a Smirnoff reference, and I've never been to Slashdot. It's a meme that became widely popular on the internet, and most people know of the "Russian Reversal." I disagree with putting excessive information by tracing it through multiple (unnecessary) gateways to the origin of the reference, which if obviously Yakov Smirnoff. Hell, most forums with reasonably large communities know of the Russian Reversal, and in this era of the Internet, it's not necessarily true that any of them access Slashdot.--MaskedLihc 02:53, 7 June 2008 (CDT)
i stand by my position. the russian reversal is implied but is not explicit. and it can be explained without the reference by the fact that the omelette is grey and lumpy like most of soviet life. and, as for slashdot, well, just no. --Evilkolbot 05:36, 7 June 2008 (CDT)
It's a meme that became popular on the internet partly because of places like Slashdot where it's been used excessively for at least 9-10 years. It's not even unlikely that it was part of the influence, because there's also a Hot Grits reference on the V mask. It's your sandbox, though. My point was there are going to be people who know the joke, but have never heard of Smirnoff, and it might be useful to mention other places where the joke is popular, and have been so for a decade. --Paulie Astaire 11:15, 8 June 2008 (CDT)

"This refers also to the fact that flavour is affected by appearance (try eating jellybeans blindfolded and trying to guess the flavour)." - While it may be true that your senses interact in this way, I'm far from convinced that this item description actually references the fact. I think this should be removed unless anyone objects. --GreyKnight 07:16, 27 September 2006 (CDT)

It's a Moxie stat day, and I'm getting 29 adventures out of these. just saying, no I'm not under the Opposum or anything.
