Talk:Lingo
I'd say the page should lose the common acronyms. Just a link to the full list would be more than enough and most of the terms listed aren't things you encounter that common: For example no new player needs to know what stuff like the OAF or the CCW even is. Try to focus on things that will be in reach of a new player. Teach them how to walk, before you show them what running looks like. If you really want to cover the whole uncut lingo of the kingdom's community, split the page into two (or even three) sections. Also when what follows a headline is just one sentence, you should consider using a different format. Like this:
Cocoabo – Performs a variety of actions, like a Cocoabo.

Does anybody really use the term "HCperm" rather than "hardperm"? Also, I've never read "Volley", "Brero", "Squito", "Spleeniar" or "Tato" anywhere but here. The same is true for "Tater", but at least I've heard that one before. I'm under the impression that Arashmin tried to include every imaginable slang word he could find. While I'm convinced he did it with the best of intentions, reading that page as someone who is just getting into KoL could be a proper downer. So I'm going to remove all the words and acronyms that look like they're either made up or aren't relevant to the average player - like BRC. I don't have an answer to everything, so feel free to put words which you think are even vaguely important to mention back in. --Yatsufusa (talk) 05:05, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- I have never heard of "hardperm", only "HCperm", although it would usually be spelled in two words. The familiar abbreviations, nope. Why would it be a "proper downer"? BRC, no, that is irrelevant. Only adding lingo that has actually been seen, sure, good idea. I corrected your post a little bit, rewind if you don't like it._Blargh (talk) 15:32, 6 September 2014 (UTC)_
- I'm alright with your corrections, since it's easier to read now. As you might have notice, there are limits to my English language skills (and nightly attention span), but I prefer looking like a stupid foreigner rather than not getting improvements done that I care about. So: No hard feelings at all. In the end we're all here to make stuff better for everyone.
I feel like newer players, who this page is aimed at, would feel discouraged if they had to learn even more shorthand and acronyms for everything. We have the Acronyms page which is even linked here, so I would like to keep most of the acronyms on that page. Also, like I already addressed above, the page seems artificially blown up by all the headlines and huge TOC. Maybe it would look like a quicker/easier read if we shortened at least the familiar types by using a table or something. Then again, it could just be me... --Yatsufusa (talk) 04:02, 7 September 2014 (UTC)- You don't look like a stupid foreigner to me, at all. In fact, I'm not even sure you are a foreigner, relative to me.
As for the page in question, I don't actually have much of an opinion, although I would like to bring to your attention the existence of __NOTOC__, which removes the TOC when included on the page._Blargh (talk) 08:26, 7 September 2014 (UTC)- Thank you. As for the __NOTOC__ command: I knew of it and briefly considered it, but I think pages in general benefit too much from it to have it removed. It's just that I'd like to trim it down a bit, so it isn't longer than a screen page. --Yatsufusa (talk) 10:00, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- I limited the TOC to just the main level of headings, which makes it much more compact. Revert if that's too little now... --Fig bucket (talk) 13:51, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

- I've seen HP more than Hardperm and HCPerm combined. Volley is totally a thing. Spleeniar is totally made up. BRC is a thing but it's old. And I'm an American so I totally know what I'm talking about. :-) --Johnny Treehugger (talk) 12:37, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
The Purpose of This Page
So if this is a page where newbies can come after they ask the forums for help in speeding up their runs and someone tells them to fax and quake arrow an LFM and they're like huh?, then terrific! But how much do we want to get into strategy? Is it useful to tell someone what arrowing is without getting into burning delay? I'm thinking we may want to make a new Ascension Strategy page which describes actual strategy, instead of the current Ascension Strategy page, which is more focused on items (green snowcones and pebblebrau, yay!). This page could then focus on definitions, and implications and interactions could stay on the strategy page. (Lesson one for the strategy page - the object of the game is to get to level 13, finish the council quests, and beat the NS, all as efficiently as possible. If at any time you're spending resources on something that is not that, stop doing that.) --Johnny Treehugger (talk) 12:37, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- While I agree that players will benefit the most from a good, holistic explanation of a technique or strategy, rather than a brief, basic explanation of what's what, I'm not sure if I would expect a page called Lingo to hold all the answers for me. Don't get me wrong: I would be totally okay with plastering the page with links to different strategy pages to our hearts' content. But what I think will never be feasible is the "Optimal ascension page. Unabridged and fully annotated, with all 47 commentaries, all 900 major and minor judgments, all 10,000 considered opinions." Even if we could write such a page, after a while nobody would be able to update it properly anymore, because it would be too long to have every remark of everything in the back of one's head. And the effort for readers could become an issue as well. What I think would work better would be several well-written sub pages and one main page, working with all those techniques and strategies without doing (much) explaining.
What I think we definitely should reword is the whole object of the game part. For a game with stick figure graphics and frames, KoL is very sandbox-y and offers several different goals. I for example enjoy stuffing things into my dc. But I like to ascend, collect tattoos, trophies and familiars as well. So maybe we should rather write "the object of this page" or something. ;)
Also Arashmin should have a big say in the future of the Lingo page, since he came up with the original idea. --Yatsufusa (talk) 14:35, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
"Dickstabber"
It seems the term Dickstabber was coined at some point before the show on the 23rd Jan 2012. I hope this helps whoever has the time to do research on this one. --Yatsufusa (talk) 04:21, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
