Talk:Mer-kin diver

From A KoL Wiki

I just got the following hit message:

He hurls some kind of glass globe at you. It hits your head, shatters, and surrounds you with boiling water. Yeeowch!

HPYou lose 1 hit point.

What makes this interesting is that it only did 1 damage. These guys are typically hitting me for about 120, so I'm assuming it's a special shot that makes it impossible to get the glass globe as a drop after he's hit me with it, although I can't prove that yet. --Melon 18:18, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Sorry everyone, it turns out I was using hot form and this is a hot attack. Doh! It should just be a standard attack after all. Ignore me. --Melon 21:50, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Might be coincidental, but Mer-kin pressureglobe only started dropped after You've Hit Bottom which makes sense, since if you read the text, that's when grandpa tells you about them.--Muhandes 19:39, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps that's only true for Myst classes (or saucerors) - I've been getting Pressureglobes on my DB and I've never met Grandpa... and am unlikely to it seems *huff* --Denarius 19:54, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Same here on the globes. I am AT and they dropped pretty easily (approx +196% item find even underwater). At least until I got 5, in which case the next 15 didn't drop a single globe. Could there be a limit of 5 a day?--JoltCola 02:11, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Meat Drops

There might be something strange going on with this thing's meat drops. After 87 encounters, I had seen base meat drops in the range 165-230. However, I've also seen 5 values higher than 230. Much higher. Up to 318. The full set of 5 values is 278, 285, 287, 307, 318.

Now, with 87 observations, odds are pretty good that there could be another base meat drop value outside the 165-230 range I had observed. But the odds that the actual range would be 165-318 when all I had seen was 165-230 in 87 tries is abysmally small. For extra strangeness, all 5 of those data points occured in the span of 7 turns (I was olfacting mer-kin for the pressureglobes at the time) and there were no other mer-kin encounters during that 7 turns then those 5.

None of my equipment or buffs were changed during that time. I hadn't gotten any pressure globes in over 40 turns, for the record. Are there perhaps 2 of these things floating around? Maybe an NS-11 style meat drop range where the high end is noticeably less likely than the low end? Or did I just win the cosmic lottery by having something with probability on an order no greater than 10^(-24) happen? --Flargen 08:31, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

  • Ah, dang, nevermind. A formula from a different set of meat drops I had run in earlier encounters had managed to propogate into the data for those fights. I should have noticed that more quickly when an observation of 274 meat yielded a base meat drop of 300-ish, and I wasn't running a negative meat modifier at the time. I guess I need to become more critical of my excel sheets, this silly sort of thing is happening to me a lot. --Flargen 08:52, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Statistics

Collected drop rate statistics. As usual, "wh: X" means the character was using a hound dog familiar at the indicated weight while under the Wallaby sign. The effects of this were and are accounted for. I'll note here that I did not record when the monster used the attack involving a globe. It is hypothetically possible that this attack makes the pressureglobe unable to drop, but I am unable to confirm this either way since I did not think about that possible issue. Most of the data was taken by characters that would usually one-shot (and always get the jump on) these guys, though. Really only the last non-putty entry was taken by a character that actually got hit a few times in combat regularly, and the drop rate he saw would suggest that the globe attack has no impact on the pressureglobe drop. --Flargen 08:01, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
