Talk:Olive stir-fry

From A KoL Wiki

It seems likely that the phrase "Mountains of olives" (both in the description and in the song currently shown as the reference) is a reference to "Mt. Olive" which appears in place names and the names of churches across the United States.

Mt. Olive is a corruption of Mount of Olives. Not coincidentally, it is near Jerusalem. --RyokoYahagi 15:59, 17 January 2006 (Central Standard Time)

The talk page agrees with me, look at that. Evil probably should not have taken down what I put up, but no harm done. Lotusduck 15:18, 29 March 2006 (CST)

  • er, no mention of jerusalem. you need more than just the mentioning of a word or phrase for a reference. go ask snickles. --Evilkolbot 15:23, 29 March 2006 (CST)
    • Actually, I was saying that the song Jerusalem references the Mount of Olives because they are geographically near each other, not that the description references the song. I don't think this has anything to do with the song. It's a coincidence not a reference, IMHO. I was just less likely to brutally delete bad references then. :) --RyokoYahagi 17:23, 13 April 2006 (CDT)

If it's about the song, then the song is about the mountain. The song reference is the one based on the word or phrase. Also, there are a lot of references in-game that aren't imagined but are simple words or phrases, such as "ere I saw elba"--that have nothing to do with the rest of the text. Yeah right. Like olive stir-fry is a reference to Popeye. I don't see why we need 10x the references that Jick and Skully ever intended. --Crowther 17:10, 29 March 2006 (CST)

Well, it isn't a reference to popeye. I'm just saying Mount of Olives is a somewhat well known phrase. "What happened when the Pope went to Mount Olive?" "Popeye nearly killed 'em." Bow Tux is a reference to botox without having anything else in the name, in all likelyhood Mountains of Olives is a reference to Mt. Olive the well known place, but not to the song. I mean, it seems like a reference to just throw in something about mountains at the end there, eh?

Also, a few people have been throwing "witticisms" into the references text that are written in Jick's style. The best example is "Some (hippies) think the pineal gland has mystical powers". Personally, I think everyone should do this as much as possible. It should be an established standard. Lotusduck 18:53, 29 March 2006 (CST)

  • nope, we're here to report them, not write them ourselves. you don't have to make stuff up to be funny here. that's the real challenge, topical yet humorous. --Evilkolbot 17:07, 13 April 2006 (CDT)

Shows how much I know. According to Pop Goes the Loathing, Mr. Skullhead has confirmed the Dan Bern reference.--RyokoYahagi 15:02, 19 April 2006 (CDT)
