"Pith and vigor"

While some are shy to speak or write phrases so crude as "piss and vinegar," I'm not totally convinced this is a Bowdlerization, as the phrase itself is relatively nonsensical compared to the alternative, "pith and vigor." It's just my impression that writers in the 1920's may have been playing with the language at the time and worrying a lot less about naughty words than those in decades previous.
