What happens if you put in a wrong combination? Do you lose the scrolls?--Joebob 03:32, 28 June 2007 (CDT)

Be careful! if you inadvertently kill the adding machine while it has some of your scrolls inside, you don't get them back! I lost a 30669 that way.

This fellow works great to combine scrolls, except that the half-adder hits you with every scroll drop. If you 'use' two 334 scrolls, it drops a 668. Use a 30669 and 33398 and it drops the 64067. Treat it just like it was a meat paster, except for making sure you have enough HP or Moxie to survive. I've not managed to use scrolls to kill it, but if I ever get enough of the 33398s then I might try that. My Lvl 9 SC, on muscle day, got 14-3-6 substat, which is possibly equal to 20 total on a non-stat day. --Blastphemist 11:45, 29 June 2007 (CDT)

For me, the monster automatically died after spitting out my 64067 scroll. --wexer9 07:57, 30 June 2007 (CDT)

I have Ambidextrous Funkslinging. If you use two scrolls at once, you get the appropriate scroll back from the monster. Wexer, I don't think it automatically dies after producing a 64067 scroll - I combined the 30669 and 33398, then two 334 scrolls, then the 668 with the 64067, and then another two 334 scrolls before it died. This supports the 4-8 scroll range given for death.--Chagchag 11:36, 30 June 2007 (CDT)

Using a detective skull, I found it only takes damage when it spits out a scroll, it looks to be 20-30 damage. It's hit points is 69 or 70. Still working on the exact numbers. --Tzom 14:00, 5 July 2007 (CDT)

We should add blasphemist's instructions to the page. The article really has no instruction on how to get your scrolls out. It just says you need the adder. It would make more sense if it had instructions for those stupid people like me who are too lazy to figure it out on their own. --Dachshund2k3 09:48, 30 June 2007 (CDT)

That's because you don't do anything to get your scrolls out... once you feed two in, the machine either dies or you get your scroll back or your scrolls are lost (if it was an invalid combo). -MarcyRoni 07:33, 4 July 2007 (CDT)
  • looks like you will only encounter this monster if the valley have dropped enough scrolls... more spading... --jeremypv 18:47, 6 July 2007 (CDT)

Best strategy with the adding machine is to pump up monster level so it has increased HP, thus it can do more scrolls.--StrawberryLetter23 08:50, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

  • Combine that strategy with mine: using healing bang potions to extend the life (or, if you have enough and have the time on your hands, using two and making as many as you can in the combat, since using two would heal it entirely) --Lukarnis 08:04, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Using Scrolls Message

Shouldn't we add the messages you get when you use the scrolls against the adding machine? I have the result message: You feed the scroll into the slot on the front of the machine, and it starts clanking and vibrating as gears turn within its metal belly. It finishes with a loud *BANG* and a wisp of smoke rises from the top of it as it spits a different scroll back out of the slot.

And the use message: You hear a grinding of gears as you feed the scroll into a slot on the front of the adding machine. --Aznpride 17:46, 31 July 2007 (CDT)

What the? I exploded it after the damage done from making my 64735 scroll, got the scroll, and it said I yoinked (not acquired) a 668 scroll and 64067 scroll. I'm not even a moxie class. Huh? --Missingno 23:48, 7 September 2007 (CDT)

And it seems I didn't actually get the 668 and 64067 scrolls. Weird. --Missingno 23:50, 7 September 2007 (CDT)
Sounds like a confused GM script. --TechSmurf 23:53, 7 September 2007 (CDT)
Yeah, that would probably be Picklish's Use Acquired Items script misreporting what you acquired during combat. --Prestige 00:10, 8 September 2007 (CDT)

Futurama

I don't think this monster is a reference to Futurama at all, it is too vague, did they actually call John a "rampaging adding machine?" If they didn't then I would have to argue against keeping that info in the article Felinoel 12:45, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

The exact lines are: Leela: That's not true. The first robot president won by exactly one vote. Bender: Ah, yes! John Quincy Adding Machine. He struck a chord with the voters when he pledged not to go on a killing spree. Professor: But, like most politicians he promised more than he could deliver. [1]. When describing him an adding machine on a killing spree or a rampaging adding machine are equally valid. Its loose but not that loose, i'd keep it unless a stronger reference was found. Discordance 14:30, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

I agree that the reference is about as flimsy as they get. This wiki really seems to suffer from an overabundance of tenuous "references". --DuckAndCower 02:53, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

How do you use two scrolls at once on it? --Iiii I I I 00:21, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Never mind, I got the scroll. --Iiii I I I 00:32, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Auto-Attack

Should it be mentioned in the notes that the Auto-Attack combat option is ignored for this monster? --Franz1 12:34, 22 March 2012 (CET)

Sure, I just added it.--Blargh (talk) 09:54, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Farming/Conserving Turns

If you want to use less turns to add your scrolls, e.g. for farming 31337 scrolls, you can increase the monster ML, thereby increasing it's defense OR you can use Dungeons of Doom potions to increase it's moxie by 25%, thereby greatly increasing it's defence. Either way it will take less damage from each addition. You can also heal it using Dungeons of Doom potions. Just thought I'd add this strategy here. MatrixM 16:04, 6 June 2012 (CEST)

Actually, someone else should probably confirm this. I may have messed up somehow. MatrixM 16:20, 6 June 2012 (CEST)

I'm 99% sure that the damage from scrolls is constant regardless of monster defense, but increasing or restoring its HP is legit. --Johnny Treehugger 16:47, 6 June 2012 (CEST)
Right, thanks MatrixM 07:13, 9 June 2012 (CEST)
