Talk:Sonofa Beach
Used to arrive via Teleportis
This area is reachable when you have teleportatitis, even when you're not level 12. Happened to me today. Discworldian 04:03, 27 June 2007 (CDT)
It happened to me as well. I got "Every Seashell Has a Story to Tell". 100 magicalness at level 8 is extremely useful :-). --Ithanox 06:51, 28 June 2007 (CDT)
Me too, I got here during the war as a hippy via Teleporttitatiwhatever at level 13, lol Jick's wrong! This was a bug reported fixed by Jick on June 25th. <<< My bum --Spatulade 14:39, 8 October 2007 (CDT)
Possible Reference?
One of the Leisure Suit Larry games (6?) had a location called Sonofa Beach. This could just be a coincidence though, since it's a fairly obvious joke. --Dmagus 22:01, 8 July 2007 (CDT)
Combat Frequency
Is there any spading on the combat rate here? I know it's low, but no known specifics.
during 3 ascensions : happens to me that with every combat, each new combat takes less time to appear. Last two combats where 15 adventures, but overall i spend 138 in the beach. Am I the only one ?? --Fernando Bono 00:43, 3 August 2007 (CDT)
I just fought a lobsterfrogman with -5% combats. --Dalgar 06:08, 16 August 2007 (CDT)
Combat rate currently spaded at 10% (N = 910, 86 encounters, 95% CI = 7.5 - 11.4%)...will confirm this by using two non-combat enhancers in the next few days.--Mis2027 15:22, 5 September 2007 (CDT)
Just to note, all my spading is post-quest thus far. I can't be sure, but I think I finished this side quest as a Frat Boy, so I'd get the lesser finished benefit, if there is one. --Mis2027 15:32, 5 September 2007 (CDT)
During the quest, my character, Eldarion, a L13 Sauceror, saw 10% combat, with no pattern suggesting the rate changed while I was going. I'd finished off the Frat Boy army and was doing the quest as a Hippy. I'd done all 3 Hippy sidequests, none of Frat ones, and killed no Hippies. I got the 5 required for the quest over the course of 47 adventures, and got 5 more over the course of another 62 adventures (after completing the quest).
Currently, there is a slight trend toward 9-9.5%, but I certainly can't rule out random error on that.
Currently, I also can't comment if finishing the quest or not, and doing it as a Hippy or Frat Boy, matters, although I will know soon thanks to Eldarion doing the quest as a Hippy.--Mis2027 19:52, 5 September 2007 (CDT)
The page doesn't mention that an outfit is required for the combat adventure to occur. I have just spent 68 turns there doing the quest without a single combat (no modifiers), then I realised I am not dressed up as a Frat Boy (or Hippy). Seeing how people get the combats at a 10% rate, I'm guessing the outfit influences that rate a lot, or the adventure could be even inacessible during the quest. --Alibulibadaha 04:26, 29 April 2008 (CDT)
- The outfits aren't required. I just got a lobby wearing a mesh cap, and he dropped a barrel to boot. --Bagatelle 20:06, 10 May 2008 (CDT)
Sonata+Monster Bait gave me 5 barrels in 15 adventures. I was quite lucky.--Asmiroth 13:42, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
Combat Frequency and Demon Names
First off, demon name frequency is NOT altered by having Lord Spookyraven's ear trumpet equipped, nor by summoning a demon already that day.
mis2027, post-quest, did quest as a Frat Boy, no Combat Frequency modifiers:
- 0.75% demon name frequency (95%CI: 0.20-1.3%)
- 9.75% lobsterfrogmen (95%CI: 7.85-11.65%)
mis2027, post-quest, did quest as a Frat Boy, Ring of conflict, The Sonata of Sneakiness
- 0.84% demon name frequency (95%CI: 0.22-1.46%)
- no lobsterfrogmen
Eldarion, during quest - see above (no demon names observed)
Eldarion, post-quest, did quest as a Hippy, no Combat Frequency modifiers:
- 0.91% demon name frequency (95%CI: 0.31-1.51%)
- 6.67% lobsterfrogmen (95%CI: 5.10-8.25%)
Captain Cream, post-quest, did NOT complete the quest, no Combat Frequency modifiers:
- 0.65% demon name frequency (95%CI: 0.30-1.00%)
- 9.82% lobsterfrogmen (95%CI: 8.52-11.13%)
Speculative Conclusions:
- Demon name frequency may increase as a result of completing the quest, and possibly even moreso by completing the quest as a Hippy.
- Demon name frequency may be tied to Combat Frequency, but the effect would be miniscule in this region.
- Combat Frequency is roughly 10% at all times, unless you complete the quest as a Hippy, in which case it drops.
--Mis2027 10:50, 21 September 2007 (CDT)
I just tried Sonofa Beach, after completing the quest as a Hippy, and applied Smooth Movement. I still got one Lobsterfrogman in 30 or so adventures, so the combat rate is more than 5% when completing it as a hippy. (It's possible that it might lower the combat rate less than 5%, which would be unusual...I don't have enough adventures to test unfortunately.)--Foggy 08:24, 31 January 2008 (CST)
March 10, 2014 Trivial
I reverted the edit based on this trivial. You can't go more than 11 noncoms between LFM, but I think the actual mechanic is a little different. It looks more like you get an LFM on turn 12, turn 24, turn 36, no matter what happens in between. I'm not 100% sure (nor am I sure that this isn't a bug). So I am leaving the page as is for now. --LotsOfPhil
Really weirdly lucky
Is the combat frequency the same in the current challenge path (Path of the Plumber)? I just managed to finish the quest in 11 turns without any combat modifiers that I know of, which at 10% frequency I estimate should have a chance of binom(11,5)*.1^5^.9^6 ~= 0.25% of happening. --Arancaytar (talk) 23:04, 8 April 2020 (UTC)
